I hope that's not what William was thinking...that would be rather callous and cruel to let the woman you loved marry another man because you didn't want to get involved. I think William has more courage and motivation to do the right thing. It would have been super awkward, but if he could have, I think he would have stopped the wedding. I've always wondered why he couldn't just call the church and ask Julia to meet him somewhere-not to marry Darcy. As to to why he didn't intervene sooner, yeah, maybe he was scared of rejection again, and also, he was respecting Julia's decision. By the time she finally gave him some encouragement, it was too late. I hate to say it, but I think that if I'd been watching season 4 in real time, I probably would have stopped watching the show. I came very close to doing just that. Because unlike other shows, marriage was for life. Eventually I figured they'd have to kill him off because I didn't even realize they were allowed to get divorces back then, hence my first ever MM fic. I find it funny that I harp about how fantastical the whole situation was regarding Darcy's murder, and yet, I had a much crazier way of getting rid of him. I'm such a hypocrite. When I speculate that episode must have inflicted trauma on loyal viewers, I'm not kidding. That was a horrendously cruel moment. But in a way it was also great, because I can't imagine another show doing it. That's the moment that burned the crumpets and took no prisoners as it were. The MM writers really said: "We're going to put our audience through emotional hell in order to tell this story." Wow. That's what hooked me, btw.

Of course, they only had her go through with the marriage because she was supposed to be written off the show. But the fan outcry during a screening was so loud that they reconsidered their position and then had to spend two years coming round full circle back to where they screwed it up.

And that's it right there. As season 6 showed us, marriage WAS for life, and getting out of it was no mean feat. Judging from people who used to be on this board but are no longer here, I'm guessing most of them left because of the wedding too. Seriously though, mad props to you for sticking it out-I don't think I could have.

Again, I watched it in retrospect, but it seems as though that's what they were doing too. Were they trying to do that again in season 8, hoping we wouldn't care because they were married, and might be content with a few occasional guest star appearances? Who knows? Maybe PM really doesn't like her, and keeps trying to write her off the show, not fully grasping that fans see her as an integral character?

See, I think that went past edgy, and bordered on stupid. It also created a problem that they still haven't fully repaired.

Where did you see Helene was supposed to be written off the show? I've only seen the show might have been cancelled, and there was a shippy ending in case it was... If they wanted to write Helene off, they missed their chance in Season 2. Sorry, William chose Julia.

If it makes you feel any better. I came very close to as well. I was really really worked up over this ending for the season. I remember telling my mother "If they don't fix this then we aren't buying the DVD's". But in retrospect-I think that was one of the reasons why I stuck around. Because that ending was such a "shocker" he doesn't get the girl-and then suspension/leave of absence. But I must say I was glad to continue watching-as I felt that Season 5 was one of the strongest seasons. To be honest I'm not all that fond of Season 4 overall. It was a very angst heavy season.

Pretty amused by how much love it's gotten already. I might have to do another one...there's so many quotable bits from that movie.

Apparently I get a special emoticon as a reward. Is it an exploding head emoticon? Pro-board needs one by January...on my Christmas list.
