Tonight The Knick did the big subway accident that I thought MM should have done last year.
The Knick has great atmosphere and cool music. It does interpersonal drama better than MM. However, it doesn't have that obsessive quality MM has. I think the difference is the layer fanciful not-quite-real that MM has.

I started watching this show about two weeks ago, having PVRed since the second season started. It took a while to get used to the sometimes jerky camera, and how spare the storytelling is, but it is pretty impressive. You can feel the grit under the nails of these people. The cast are exceptional and the stories compelling. And the lack of commercials doesn't hurt either!

The cast are exceptional and the stories compelling. And the lack of commercials doesn't hurt either! I agree about the jerky cam. I hate faux realism. That said, the historical detail is amazing. I find the music box music similar to MM, and I think that helps make the show. It's almost like putting the historical series in a snow globe.
