Just to nit pick, please don't use the collective 'we', as not all audience members want the same thing......personally, as I said, I really enjoyed this season.... So you don't want more historical characters? I'm surprised. I'm not expecting everyone to want all of these, it's a pick and play. If you don't want any ignore it. Yes, I'd like to see more historical characters, but really don't care much about the relationships. My point is that no one can speak for the collective and make sweeping statements that "WE want to see....." I'm sure that if the writers paid attention to everything I wanted, it would become a documentary/historical detective show, and lots of other people would be complaining......

I'm not upset about it, so no need to apologise.......my point is simply that the MM audience is so diverse, no one person can speak for everyone, and the writers can't listen to any one group without possibly offending another......

I don't try and speak for everyone it was a turn of phrase. I was trying for some levity but I guess it didn't work. Why don't I just delete the damned comment and hope it goes away!

There has been no connection between episodes. Roland was on briefly and never mentioned after. W and J were going to build a house, found bodies on the land, put it up for sale and decided to continue to live in a hotel. There have been some really good episodes but the season itself needs a common thread, and I don't mean George's romances. Pretty much. We've said it before, and I think many of the regulars are on the same page, but I can't say that I have found any one of the episodes to be horrible with the exception of Excitable Chap, which was so manic and OOC I'm still wondering what the hell happened. But, yeah, there was no common thread tying many of the eps together that other seasons have had, and as Hodge mentioned, this has been a character arc of some sort. It was missing this season. I hope it returns next. I mentioned my complaints in "The Devil Inside" and you've hit on most of them, Fallenbelle. (Excitable Chap was one of the most cringe-worthy episodes of the entire show's run; its one bright moment being, "I've had better".) I've binge-watched 10 seasons in 4 months so the contrasts of the earlier seasons to this one are really evident. (I will confess to not having seen the season finale- I will be testing my willpower from now until October!) The one thing I will mention that I haven't seen elsewhere is the lack of layers in an episode. I can recall so many episodes from earlier seasons where I've said upon re-watching (I've lured in a co-worker to watching the show now, too), "I forgot ALL of that happened in this episode!" Many to choose from, but "Murdoch in Wonderland" is a great example. It's the party, Murdoch under suspicion of murder, Ruby showing up because- hello!- Julia's getting married in that episode, and Murdoch releasing Ava Moon from jail. All of those things had the same measure of importance in the episode and it made it feel like they used every minute of the 45 they were given. I don't feel that depth much anymore. So many of the cases are straightforward with very little cleverness; it's all very rote crime procedure now. And I'm really done with George's love life. Please, for the character's sake and ours, get him a permanent girlfriend. Let's also revisit William's religion and how it's affecting his inability to get promoted. Let's see William and Julia discuss their house/their future/their children (if they're going down that route, they'd better do it quickly). Let's bring back some other characters from the earlier seasons, if possible. Ruby, Jasper, Detective Guillaume, to name a few. Let's have an arcing murder mystery. (I know shows hate to do that because it makes it less attractive for repeats/syndication, but it makes for better storytelling.) Let's get back to the history of the city. The Toronto Fire was a great reference and really brought something to the episodes. What was the aftermath of that? How about the CNE? Etc. This show is still ripe with ideas, but it sort of feels they're resting on their laurels a bit. Success breeds complacency? I hope they come out strong next season and hit the ground running.

It feels like the show is being written for syndication now rather than a season of good stories with arcs running through. Syndication seems to be the death of great shows.

As with all tv series it is important to keep the characters. But the stories and plots need to be very different, we have seen so many series that for one reason or another they have changed the characters and lost viewers. A tv series is very much a soap opera where we bond with each character. The Mentalist, NCIS to name just a few who lost viewers. MM has always had pathos mixed with humour, mystery and drama. Yes there is something missing this season, not to say I would stop watching of course, I just hope to see Brackenreid back and a good thrilling story line.

Just watched Series 9 Episode 17 With love from Buffalo.
It was a mere 33 minutes long! Any reason for this?
I checked that the next episode is 42 minutes long.
Did they cut any scenes from Ep 17?
This was on a DVD release and not from a TV station.
They also left the Christmas Show off the release too. I was wondering why?

The Christmas movies are stand alone and sold separately.

The Region 1 DVD has the episode running at 44 minutes. In fact all the episodes are that length, but I know they're edited in Region 2. Though I don't know why they may have edited so much from 9x17.

I'm really curious as to why your version is only 33 minutes...which country are you in? I stream my episodes from Acorn TV and mine is showing 44 minutes, but I bought the DVD's for my Grandmother, so now I'm curious if hers are intact...they're North America/Region 1.

I don't think any of us are ready to stop watching - on the contrary as a mater of fact. We'd just like the sparkle and arc to return. I suppose you could argue that one was made apparent in the season finale, but I think that's a bit of a stretch. We need a stronger, less secret one.
