This week's episode was a tad confusing. It was more political than usual. At the very end they mentioned the coffin, that hadn't been mentioned until then. I'm loving it, but was confusing last night.

I'm loving it, but was confusing last night. I remember they mentioned a coffin in the middle of the episode. They were thinking about the question: why would MacDonald write a permission to take the gold away. That's what the prime minister said: Shanly claimed the soldier's body was smuggled back across the border, but that Union spies had got wind of it. So he requested a letter of authority to escort the casket home to ensure the spies didn't intercept the body. But there was no dead soldier. So they did mention a coffin earlier, but they didn't mention directly it was on the train, I suppose. |

Thanks  To be honest, coffin in the train surprised me as well, but I checked the subtitles and it turnes out that I simply didn't know what casket meant. |

Maybe writer wanted to emphasize that it was the prime minister's speech, so he used an euphemism (as it stated in one of my vocabularies) for common word 'coffin'. I mean, to make his speech more official or something like that. I'm not certain 'cause English is not my native, but isn't it a plausible option?

Casket and coffin are pretty interchangeable in English. They talked about him hiding the gold in the coffin so as long as you know the meaning of the two words it was pretty clear.

It was a complicated episode, esp at the end. It kept making twists and turns. He filled the coffin/casket with the gold because people would think it had the dead body of the (actually non-existent) soldier in it. Nobody was going to open it and check that it really did have a body in it.

Yeah, it was difficult to understand for a non-native speaker. I had to watch it twice - not as if I felt sorry for doing it, of course ;D
I am very interested in this political stuff about Canada's role and viewpoint in the American civil war. Do you, our Canadian fellow-fans, know more about this topic?

Don't sweat it at all. I always watch them twice, esp the ones with more complicated plots.

This episode was one of the more complicated ones, particularly since you didn't have Murdoch mentally envisioning what happened. As a result, he explained more in words, and I would imagine it was particularly tough for the non-native speakers.
It was a well-done episode, however, and one I really enjoyed, in spite of there being only the one scene with Julia (intriguing though it was). I have to say the writers really do a tremendous job. There's only been one episode I didn't especially care for (Kommando) and that if statistics hold true, should be the only one for season 4.

That's true he did explain a lot more with words and there weren't as many visuals going on at the end. It also just went quickly from one possible scenario/murderer to another at the end.
Kommando was a great episode I thought but it was disturbing so I'm not sure I'd rewatch it a lot. The only one I've thought was lacking was Tattered and Torn. It felt too recycled and dull to me.

I didn't mean to imply that Kommando was a bad episode - I just found the story one that I wouldn't rush to watch again (and in fact, only watched once) which is unlike my usual reaction.
Tattered and Torn was not the most exciting episode they've done, but I thought it was an eye-opener for Murdoch on many levels, so I found it interesting. The last three episodes I thought have been very well done, in particular.

Yeah, he did realize some things but for some reason it just wasn't that interesting to me. But really no MM episode is bad, they're all so well done. I agree the last 3 have been particularly good.
