So is it possible that Helene Joy became unavailable for S5 after much of it had been written? The writers quickly re-tooled the episodes to add Dr. Grace's character. Think of tonight's episode. It would have been an interesting episode if Julia had been the one dealing with an ex-fiance, not Dr. Grace. Maybe that also explains why Julia's replacement is a woman. It would be easier to re-write with another woman character as the coroner. I simply am at a loss as to why S5 is so bad and am trying to figure out why!!!

It is possible that her availability changed after they'd done a lot of the writing. I could see them switching out some of Julia's character's plots for Emily's. Although so much of Emily's plots revolved around George and that supposed chemistry. They wouldn't have done that with Julia's character, even if you replace George's part with William. I am pretty sure they wrote the finale before they knew S6 would be picked up by CBC. I know they found that out in the middle of filming an episode, but toward the end of shooting S5.

I really enjoyed this episode, especially the scene at Ottawa. It was great to also see Stockton (sp) make an appearance. I really liked when Murdoch said something along the lines to Brackenreid about Stockton at least being an honest man. His dishonesty and law-breaking is really getting under Murdoch's skin. I'm glad the writers showed this and didn't sweep it under the carpet, becasue Murdoch is having quite the fight with his conscience. I believe he's beginning to question whether he did the right thing by letting a murderer go, even though the woman was no murderer, but a woman out to protect other women from being defiled by such a horrible man.
It really makes the viewer think about the law and the situations those who are supposed to uphold the law are put in, because I think if Murdoch would have let her hang, he would have been in the same mess with his conscience. Well done. I feel for Murdoch. I think he wants to do right and confess but he can't because Brackenreid is involved. And we know Brackenreid puts his men first above anything else. Plus, if Murdoch outs himself, he could cost Brackenreid a job--a man who has three mouths to feed.
Anyhoo, as for the murder, I sorta wish it would have happened on the ice. That would have really livened things up, but I'm also pleased it happened off the ice. It was a nice history into hockey, because I don't know hockey's history that well. One thing I love about MM, I always learn a bit more about Canuck history. Funny, I took Canadian history all through school. Guess it went in one ear and out the other, huh? LOL.
I loved the ending when they referenced "car" but said "carriage." Haha. Reminded me of the younger years when we'd have to move our net off the road. Back then roads on the rez weren't sanded so we skated right on the ice-covered road. Whee!
I sorta guessed the killer wore skates to up his height, but I couldn't figure out why the killer wound up the killer until the gambling was brought up.
I enjoyed the Dr. Grace sub-plot, but if this man was so awful, I can't figure out why she said "yes" to marriage in the first place. Maybe family pressure? I"m not sure. She didn't really say. Okay, I could go on and on, but I have dinner to start. That's it for now.

Yeah, I wonder if we'll get more about the Ava Moon/Constance Gardner storyline in S6. It would be a little weird to drop it now when it's still mentioned so much but nothing more has come out about it. I would like to see Julia's reaction to it. And I agree that William would have felt guilty either way. The new constable is Giles, Stockton retired after S4. I think Emily's fiance probably seemed fine when she was courting him and agreed to marry him. But it did sound like she wanted more from life than just being a young wife with no independence before settling down and having a family. She wanted to become a doctor and if she had married him, or most men at the time, she wouldn't have been able to do that. She probably already had decided on that dream before she agreed to marry him and then realized she didn't want to give up that dream. Then he became controlling and possessive when she tried to let him down easily and she got scared of him. That's why she was worried when she heard his name involved in the murder at the beginning. But I think even she was surprised he got as crazy as he did. Or she wouldn't have even agreed to have diner with him. I wonder if she'll have to have George be her bodyguard in S6. Yeah, I loved that "wagon!" line. It was very clearly a nod to the scene from Wayne's World but about pick up, street games of hockey in general, too.

Very true. I bet the fiance was one of those--hides his true colours until the eleventh hour. I wonder if he'll be back to harrass her in s6. I sorta like the George bodyguard thing, because he is a sick twisted man. Anyone who hides under a blanket in a morgue pretending to be dead is missing the whole bag of marbles, not just a few! LOL. I enjoyed reading your insight into Emily's reason for agreeing to marry him. That helped quite a bit because it confused me at first.

Yeah, he seems to be one of those guys who have very fragile egos so that if you you wound their pride they will never let you forget it. He's become so fixated on this one rejection that it motivates almost his every move. That will probably only get worse. I'm thinking we will see him in S6. Can you imagine if he teams up with James Gillies? *shudders*

The Oshawa Generals just won the J. Ross Robertson Cup as champions of the Ontario Hockey League Junior A champions. Nice to know that John Ross Robertson is still being commemorated in amateur hockey: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ross_Robertson

Whelp, I got busy and failed doing an episode a day. I'll get caught up to do an episode a day til season 9 at least. (or try) I'll totally watch through the rest of the eps by then at least 1. It's nice to see William confronted with letting Constance go. 2. William just does not like Emily and I cannot figure out why. 3. Brackenreid seemed surprised that William was willing to admit their fault was why Giles was always on their case. 4. I cracked up when Brackenreid told William to enjoy some leisure time and he replied with 'read a book'. 5. People always seem to underestimate George! He really came in at the right time as well. Emily's ex-fiance was quite the piece of work.

I love that book line, too! So William! And it works much better than "trying to be funny" remarks about what a waste of time TV will be some day... I agree William is irked that Emily is not Julia. At the same time, while William is trying to establish his hierarchical distance, I feel he should have taken Emily under his wing a little more. Emily was a kindred spirit in many ways. He should have liked her a lot, or at least recognized he was taking out his bitterness on her. William's weird attitude toward her character was one of the things that went wrong with her development.

This is one of my favourite episodes, despite the credit to Stephen Harper at the end, mainly because I'm a huge hockey fan.....I loved the end when they moved the nets after shouting WAGON! This is also one of the first episodes I saw.......

By bizarre coincidence, I caught a random episode of Da Vinci's Inquest around the same time as I first saw this episode (probably back in the dark wintertime of February). Dom was driving through a quiet residential neighborhood and came across a group of boys playing street hockey. Naturally they yelled 'Car!' and pulled the net aside I like MM's little hockey game, with William and George doing a bit of trash talking in competition hahaha.

She also did stick her nose in his business a little bit when she was still training under Julia. I normally would have expected him to realize the way he was treating her sooner. I'd also rather read than watch hockey or any other sport for that matter.

NPR this morning had a piece on the origin of the slang term "Hella", and apparently there is one lineage that gives Toronto credit. So now you have me imagining William and George throwing a bit of "hella" at each other while they are at it...

That is a very Canadian experience......I grew up on a dead end street, where the perpetual road hockey game was on, and we were always shouting CAR!......the only time there wasn't a road hockey game on was when it got cold enough for my father to build the back garden rink for us....then the perpetual hockey game shifted to our garden....then there were shouts of "Watch out for the yellow ice!", because the dog had a habit of peeing on it.....
