That is simply gorgeous. I love rose coloured gold.

This is certainly no hipster PDA. I'm amazed this thing survived as long as it did. It's incredibly fragile. Why can't I have nice things?

If William and Julia ever have a baby, I might give this to them as a baby-shower present. 10kt gold Victorian-era baby ring. With garnet & pearls in star-settings. Absolutely adorable! The size is unclear from the pic: does the baby wear this or does one or both parents wear it? Does possession of such a ring bring you on board as a shipper?

It is a VERY small ring. Here it is next to an ordinary staple, that you'd find in any stapler:

Sterling silver pen & pencil set. S. Mordan & Co., ca. 1880. Sterling-fronted pocketwatch stand. Hallmarked Birmingham, 1920. I removed the silver from the front of the stand and hammered out the offending dents. Looks much better, now.

You are a wonder Shangas! Do you have a network of dealers who hold on to the good stuff until you've had a chance to look through it?

No, I'm just lucky.
I know the lady who owned the silver watch-stand. She'd had it for years. And years. And years. AND YEARS. Something like a decade or more. And nobody ever bought it. I guess nobody had a use for it or a want for it. That, and the price was outrageously high (nearly $500).
I'd shown interest in it at least twice in the past, but every single time the price just scared me away.
In the end, she got fed up with it. She didn't want it anymore and nobody else was showing any interest. She hacked off like 80% of the price and virtually gave it away to me.
The case needed a few repairs. The silver panel was very dented. She said I could take it to a silversmith and have it repaired, but I was too lazy for that (and I didn't want to spend more money on it).
I pulled out the teeny-tiny nails holding the silver panel to the front of the case. Then I used a small ball-peen hammer and a jeweler's anvil in my toolbox to hammer out the dents. Then I just nailed it back on.

You are also one of those collectors who appreciates quality even if it is not in pristine condition. You are willing to put in some work, with your very interesting skill set, to improve the piece, hence enrich its value. Add to that you can out-wait the dealers and voila...an incredible collection at a reasonable price. My hat is off to you O God of Victorian Antiques!

Then I just nailed it back on. Neat stuff as usual. I remember my dad having a clock something like that, probably in stainless steel though. I remember the case on it snapping shut. It would open up and be its own stand. Of course I forgot all about it until I saw your pictures. I hope luck keeps blessing you.

Add to that you can out-wait the dealers and voila...an incredible collection at a reasonable price. My hat is off to you O God of Victorian Antiques! Many years ago, I read some quotes, which said stuff along the lines of: Antiques can be expensive. But if you're willing to accept a few flaws, then a wide range of lower-priced items suddenly become available. The other one was: If you learn to do your own repairs, then you can get a lot of cheap antiques. Both of which are true. Over the years I've gotten a lot better at assessing what I can, or cannot fix. When I bought the watch-stand, it had two or three large dents in the silverwork. I was NOT going to spend the money to take it to a silversmith and have him fix something I could probably do at home. The thing was just nailed on. So if I could remove the nails, hammer out the dents and nail it back...why shouldn't I? So I did. Reshaping the silver and knocking out the dents was very easy - the metal was very soft and thin. It's not a perfect job, no. But then I wouldn't want a perfect job. I want it to look neat, not perfect.

Sterling silver Edwardian card case. I could imagine Dr. Ogden or some other such professional in the MM universe carrying something like this. Been after one of these for a long time, to put my cards into. Finally got one at a price I could *just* afford. Most of these go for crazy, crazy, CRAZY money, so...yeah...

Very ornate. Is it heavy?
