I think someone should have sent that to CityTV at the time. I think it's hilarious their thoughts for MM were even straying in this general direction. They must have been desperate to real in teh ladies if they were dangling pinup guys. But it would be odd if that one episode is the only example.

Didn't see much on the Julia-tease point, though I did see some serious Julia pleasing: William rushing on bicycle when "Dr.Ogden needs him" and William claiming he can stay in the water-melon hitting pose a long time (Julia does taunt him, though).

It seems that William doesn't just have a thing about rear ends. Last night I was watching Body Double and when William and George enter the 'love nest' George is ogling a painting of a half naked woman with ample boobs. William says something to George and then ogles the boobs himself for longer than necessary. I've watched this ep a few times and never noticed this before. A couple of eps later, in Belly Speaker, he's trying his best not to stare at a woman's cleavage. This thread has tainted my viewing....

I don't think we had any from that episode yet. Season 1 is starting to remind me of those pre-teen films where science nerds spy on the girls locker rooms. All we're missing is Julia running in slow motion, perky breasts bouncing, to slightly epic music. One thing that has confounded me: usually William scolds George then takes a look himself (the same schtick you find in all comedies from the dawn of time). But in Walk on the Wild Side (the Rose books) and I think In The Altogether (the "cheeky" postcards) William really doesn't look twice at the risque stuff. This seems like a bit of a character inconsistency to me. Is William barely repressing his sexual interests or has he so completely repressed them that he can correct everyone else about it just like he corrects spelling and grammar?

I just downloaded the screen caps from Body Double and it seems that William was ogling the painting alongside George but carried on despite admonishing George. Double standards or what! Also the boobs weren't quite as ample as I remembered but she did have a good figure. By Walk on the Wild Side and In the Altogether William was committed to Julia, even if she was married in WotWS. Maybe he considers himself above the risque stuff now.

Anyway, pencil that in under "character flaws". (And under the "Perv" thread!) Ooh good point about William "character developing" beyond the ogling. I guess I can buy that. While Journey to the Centre of Toronto is supposed to be parody, by that point we can say he's totally oblivious!

While Journey to the Centre of Toronto is supposed to be parody, by that point we can say he's totally oblivious! As I've only been watching MM for a few months, but have watched all the eps many times over and a couple of times in order, I've really seen how the character has developed and grown over the 7 seasons. Kudos to the writers that made that possible. William has grown into an independent thinker, not always shackled by dogma. He's learned to see things from experience and weigh that against the teachings of his religion. A thing I'm grateful for as a person w/o faith, I'm not sure I could have watched it if he always brought a religious bent to everything. That's one of the reasons I don't think it's necessary for him to marry in a catholic church. He's already said he'd accept the consequences of marrying a divorcee which I'm sure is more of a sin than marrying outside the catholic church as even the protestant churches wouldn't marry a divorcee.

I agree about the character development and long term arcs: I think that is brought by the stable and talented cast as well as the writers. For me this long term character development, which gives us fodder to talk about, is what elevates MM - but it's also what casual viewers will miss.
A while back I posted some quotes from a book on Cult TV. This "bible" consistency that upholds the imagined world of the show was an important criteria.

So, Snacky, you'll be happy to hear this. I just finished listening to a podcast on "ladies' backsides" and their cultural history and it turns out that ladies' bottoms were very fetishized in the Victorian era. This included the genesis of the bustle as a fashion trend, and actually speaks a lot for why William's gaze often goes where it does. Imagines him looking at such fetish pornography as a much younger man. In case you wanted to give it a listen-I found it quite interesting actually. Historically and present day: www.stuffmomnevertoldyou.com/podcasts/fat-bottomed-girls/I always thought the bustle was just a wacky fad of some sort - it never occurred to me that it might actually be a turn on. I always associate the Victorian male gaze with tiny pale fragile women. Now you have me thinking the rap song refrain: "I like big butts, and I cannot lie..."! I think he explored his "dark places" as well.

The reason is William pretends he isn't looking. George either openly looks at something sexy going on, or he politely doesn't look. True perviness involves an element of deviousness that George doesn't have. By the way, I love your new avatar CC!

Ten points if you can tell me the episode it's from. Hint: it's last season.
