Yes, I agree but I think we should perhaps take this with a grain of salt. Do we consider it part of the MM canon or not? It is atypical MJ because the murder is left unsolved and it was written not as part of her mystery series but for a specific non-MM project, and a wonderful project it is. Nevertheless, I think it is a worthy topic for discussion here. I am specifically concerned about the fact that both WM's parents are alive, he is older than we thought and his dad is a mean drunk. Remember when Harry asks William if he had ever seen him hit his mother or hit William for that matter. William admitted that he had not and that the mean drunk he thought Harry was existed only in his distorted memories from his childhood. Just something to think about Once again this is where we have to separate the book from the movies from the show. It's not part of the show canon but it does form a basis for the character and gives us an inkling into why he became who he did albeit different from the book William. I read Shipwreck as a continuation of the books, keeping it separate from the show. There's enough in the idea behind Shipwreck to form a back story for show William without it being exactly the same as the book. It gives me the shivers to think of MM trying to "transition" away from Julia somehow. Did you ever watch Smallville? I lost interest when the show tried to transition from Lana to Lois. Even though Lois is comic book canon and has a mountain of tradition behind her, the show had developed the relationship with Lana already, and that couldn't be undone.

I have to laugh at us with all of this "is it part of the canon or isn't it?" angst. Snacky should love it! hahahaha, I'm staying away from it because I already don't really like William's character in the books.

I think the book will somehow influence the show, but they won't be the same thing. William gets together with a woman name Amy in the book, and our Julia is a combination of Amy and Dr. Ogden. So, the little girl is named after her great*3 grandmother-amy for the books, but that would be Julia for the tv show.

I have to laugh at us with all of this "is it part of the canon or isn't it?" angst. Snacky should love it! ... and what makes this worse and more complicated is there are three different canons to keep track of. Major angst! When fanfic takes on a life of its own and becomes "head canon", you can add that!

I have trouble with the books and I know it is because I had watched MM for months before I read them so it was very wierd.

When fanfic takes on a life of its own and becomes "head canon", you can add that! It would make it easier to stick to one canon and not muddle it up with the other two. I have never seen the movies so I don't know anything about them and to be frank, I don't need to know. Sorry Snacky

I do like historical novels, but there is something about the character of William Murdoch I don't like in the books. I'm more of a fan of the ingenious characters - re: the TV Murdoch!

I may read some of it but like the books it's completely separate from everything else and never taken seriously as part of the show.

It took the show for that and after seeing it I couldn't really take to book Murdoch. He's very much a character of his time and guilty of the bigotry and prejudices of the period whereas show William is way ahead of his time in many respects though not always very forward thinking when it comes to things outside his job. If MJ wrote more MM books I would probably read them but I much prefer the show.

Oh how to decide? Each one of William's compartments is essential to the whole. Adorkable!William is probably my favourite because he has more vulnerability than the others.

I love Adorkable!William, but I don't want the MM team to take that persona over the top into self-parody. Glory Days kind of does that, but I think it's okay because the whole episode is a very subtle (and under-appreciated!) parody ep. I think DetectiveGadget!William has a slight edge for me.

DetectiveGadget!William has the advantage of revealing those "What make William ridiculously happy?" moments and giving us giggles with the "historical gotcha's".
