I knew about the books long ago but never got around to reading them. It took the show for that and after seeing it I couldn't really take to book Murdoch. He's very much a character of his time and guilty of the bigotry and prejudices of the period whereas show William is way ahead of his time in many respects though not always very forward thinking when it comes to things outside his job. If MJ wrote more MM books I would probably read them but I much prefer the show. Do you prefer Adorkable!William, Casanova!William, DetectiveGadget!William, or TheMurdochinator!William? Late to the party but I will cast my vote. It was Detective Gadget that got me interested in this show in the first place. The shipping came later. I loved Murdoch on the Corner with the surveillance camera, the night vision glasses in Convalescence, and the black light box for detecting blood. I guess it's because I used to watch CSI. I am also married to a retired science teacher. I guess that explains a few things! I love science nerds !

We swoon when even William pulls out those gadget magnifying glasses of his!

I don't think I would have enjoyed the books without the TV show. I do like historical novels, but there is something about the character of William Murdoch I don't like in the books. I'm more of a fan of the ingenious characters - re: the TV Murdoch! I agree with you, Talbotraill, about the books. I have read some of MJ's other work, and I do like her style. But I do not like the book Murdoch, or movie Murdoch, as much as the TV William. Maureen does dedicate Shipwreck to Yannick. I found the book a very easy read and no where near as dark as the original books. I also appreciate that MJ stuck to her own established time and story line to keep consistency with the other books in that series. At Fan fest Christina Jennings mentioned the book as a basis for an episode. The production team seems to know that there is interest in William's "back story". They claim to read the fan forums , but I still wonder which ones they actually frequent. Of course I think they should be consulting this one: heaven knows there are lots of great minds here with lots of pithy commentary !

I think we heard about casting "William as a boy" at one point - I wonder how they will tie the episode into the current era, though? So, we will probably get a shipwreck, and a gruff priest teaching young William how to solve mystery. Meh.

I still get giddy when he talks about sprockets! Hmm is there some place we can vote on this? Perhaps this should come up at the fanfest! Are we going to see more Detective Gadget? Some fans find that as hot as William in a vest!!!

I have to admit to getting a kick out of William talking about sprockets. Has William said the word "sprocket" yet? That in itself could be hot. Yes he has. When George wants to give him the caffeine drink William says he's created his own advantage, sprockets.
