HODGE!!!! (T.T) NOOO!! So sad. Ibad photoshopped Speaking of bad photoshop, how long does it take Henry to flip through 20 pics? D'oh! And if William took the trouble to make all those pinholes, why didn't he just flip through the pics himself? D'oh! I was happy to see Detective Gadget in action, though, and it wazs about time Bertillon got mentoned. He's on page one of every forensics textbook.

Stockton was inspector in 1881.
He retired from Chief Constable in 1899.
By 1902 he's already suffering from Alzheimer's Disease.
At least the people who researched that element of the episode pulled it off accurately.

...Whistles were not officially issued to the police until 1884. And even then, it started in London in 1884. It would've been a year or so before they would've been issued to officers in other parts of the Empire. Before then, officers carried rattles. Someone in the props department didn't do their research. The real problem with the photo is it looked badly photoshopped. But I seem to be the only one who felt this way. I think only a history buff would be upset at the whistles, most people wouldn't care. I did notice the badly photoshopped photo though, felt I could do better myself.

Hey it's hard making people look 20 years younger. Tommy Two Cakes!! Hehehehehe... Couldn't respond to your longer post on my kindle. Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerd! But it's very cute on you since you took our love of vests to heart! How on earth did you get in a knowledge-position where you could spot out of date whistles?

Whilst I'm upset about Hodge I'm more upset about Brian Kaulback, he's such a nice guy and now he's out of a job. If Canadian actors get paid by the episode and Hodge wasn't in every episode, this may be a blessing in disguise. Paul Aitken mentioned the budget issue - CBC didn't increse it to cover raises and so forth. Perhaps Kaulback is being shifted onto another budget for another show instead of "let go".

Appleby & Perkins: Tweedle Dum & Tweedle Dee. Hodge: Dodger. Brackenreid: Tommy Two Cakes!!
And yes, Alzheimers can fester for YEARS. Most likely Stockton already had it in the 1890s and by 1899 it had gotten noticeable enough that he had to retire. By 1902 it would've advanced significantly. I know it's just acting, but all the signs are there.
People with Alzheimers typically have very good long-term memory. It would explain why Stockton can remember the case, albeit, snatches of it at a time.
People with Alzheimers won't remember peoples' names so well. But they might remember nicknames (hence "Tommy Two Cakes").
They won't remember details like years and dates so much, unless they were REALLY important and significant to their personal histories (June 21).
And they will often fixate on one thing in particular (like hot tea).
So it's a very accurate depiction of Alzheimers' disease.
---
In response to your question about the whistles, I'm researching the history of policing for the next issue of my magazine. That's how I found out about the 1884 date. That was the year that the London Police (Scotland Yard) officially adopted whistles for their constables and threw out the old rattles (which by then, they'd been using for centuries). So no photograph taken in 1881 would ever have had whistles since they weren't issued then.
