This may sound strange, but we have not really had any episodes that address the plumbing issues in Toronto at this time. Does Station House 4 have an outhouse? Like many series, we never see anyone needing to use the facilities. But I think Murdoch Mysteries, of any show, would be the one to explore that. I'd like to see a few more of those every day activities that aren't usually shown portrayed explored more in future episodes.

They talked about plumbing this season...I think they were upgrading the pipes at the station house...or putting them in for the first time...can't quite remember I think in S6 they talked about searching through the sewers to find a piece of evidence...so I think a fair amount of Toronto had plumbing by 1900. Obviously the rich would be more likely to have it though. But uh, I did some research on Toronto's sanitary conditions once for a fic (that I never wrote) and a lot of the sewage got dumped into lake ontario unfiltered and the main pipeline kept breaking and causing a lot of typhoid outbreaks (one of which I think killed book William's first fiance Liza) and illnesses and stuff like that up until around the late 1890s. Then they started building a water filtration plant on Toronto Island and that got completed around 1912? maybe, can't quite remember.

They haven't addressed a lot of the huge dramatic possibilities (yet) like the great fire. I'm wondering whether this is because the newer set of writers are disconnected from the history of the period or the "disneyfication" process has discouraged attention to the larger tragedies of the period.

This was the fire I was thinking of: proposedwebsite.weebly.com/five-orangemen-killed-in-the-line-of-duty-july-10th-1902.htmlIt's not on my original timeline, but it's one of my additions a few posts later. I just looked up the Great Toronto Fire. You're right - that would be kind of hard to ignore. But I think they also kind of ignored a Great Blizzard or something in there, too, because of the seasons filmed... Here is the link to my thread, there are all sorts of goodies in it: murdochmysteriesfans.proboards.com/thread/706/happened-1902-eh?page=1The failure to cover the Anglo-Japanese alliance is also killing me because that was a major domino for the World Wars - both England's ambiguous position vis-a-vis Europe and Japan's ambiguous position vis-a-vis Asia.

I'd like to see a few more of those every day activities that aren't usually shown portrayed explored more in future episodes. They discovered the man Hodges killed while building toilets. In other news, there is a mysterious second floor that we've never seen that includes a lunch room! This also raises a question about female employees. I've read how early female scientists might be accepted to work in a lab or hear lectures, but they would still have to run across the street to a nearby restaurant or make some other arrangement to use the facilities! These were days when women, excuse the pun, had to fly by the seat of their pants! I think the question should be raised, though, since there were many female telegraphers and typists and such. The "new woman" was being actively encouraged to support herself and avoid "slavery" to men as part of effort to gain the vote - in the U.S. this was because their own former black slaves already had the vote! For the record, I also watch period shows to get obsessive period detail. That's why expect MM to keep historical-geek and even dedicated researchers employed. I LOVE the detail of SH4, and I have a sneaking suspicion some video game artists were involved in its creation because there is a lot of tangible "itemization" of that set.

Um, I don't think they've seen S8 yet considering their handle and that's kind of a major spoiler so...you might want to change that bit...just saying. Haha, I've been told that the second floor doesn't actually exist on the set. It's just a staircase to nowhere.

Yeah, there was a lot of candy invented way back when. I think even 'kisses' were early 1900's. They should totally incorporate that into a Valentine's Day ep...

Ah, I see. Didn't know about that one! Yeah I know, I did a fic covering it. Well, the fire itself was only really the first chapter and after that they were dealing with a (historically inaccurate) body they discovered in the wreckage. (Amazingly no one actually died in the fire itself. And only one guy exploded himself after the fact while clearing rubble. They named a street after him.) So I didn't go into the aftermath in huge detail. Though it was millions of dollars of damage. Pretty substantial back then.

The writing staff are well aware of the Great Fire, and several people (including me) have asked if it will be included. I would suspect it will be if we get a series 10. The 1902 fire is not one that is mentioned (I didn't know about it and my Great Grandfather was part of both the Fire Department and the Orange Lodge). I suspect that would be because, despite the loss of life, it only involved one building and was isolated on the waterfront. The 1904 fire destroyed a huge part of downtown Toronto and had a major economic effect on the City.
Cheers
