Ah, I see. Didn't know about that one! Yeah I know, I did a fic covering it. Well, the fire itself was only really the first chapter and after that they were dealing with a (historically inaccurate) body they discovered in the wreckage. (Amazingly no one actually died in the fire itself. And only one guy exploded himself after the fact while clearing rubble. They named a street after him.) So I didn't go into the aftermath in huge detail. Though it was millions of dollars of damage. Pretty substantial back then. Well no one officially died. There were also only supposed to be a handful of murders in Toronto over the years, yet MM manages to find one in Toronto every week!

I'm puzzled as to why we haven't had a candy ep already, given that clear Disney streak that has taken hold of MM. (Let it gooooooooooooooooooooo!!!) Yeah, there was a lot of candy invented way back when. I think even 'kisses' were early 1900's. They should totally incorporate that into a Valentine's Day ep... The pictures I've seen from boardwalks of the era are quite spectacular. Perhaps the reason they've avoided this sort of ep is that building the set would be extremely expensive.

They haven't addressed a lot of the huge dramatic possibilities (yet) like the great fire. I'm wondering whether this is because the newer set of writers are disconnected from the history of the period or the "disneyfication" process has discouraged attention to the larger tragedies of the period. the fire was in 1904...if we get a s10, i hope they cover it. i want them to do an ep on toronto island. they've only ever mentioned it in the show once or twice but there's tons of stuff they could do with that place (like recreate julia's skinny dipping thing with murdoch at hanlan's point) and the amusement grounds (like dealing with the whole animal cruelty thing of the diving horse attraction). or a candy ep. there were more and more sweets coming in from the states around then. george would be in heaven! The rowing club in Still Waters was on the island, not sure if it was supposed to be in the ep but I'm pretty sure there actually was one on the island at that time. Also StH took place on the island, not that you could see it and obviously it wasn't filmed there. Recreating Julia's skinny dipping with William, not a bad idea!

(which probably had like maybe a ten thousand population). All the really weird deaths happen there so they count for like five of Toronto's murders.

Markham may be a secret martian colony posing as humans - George is just on the verge of figuring that out! Anyway those deaths don't really count as human, I guess...

The writing staff are well aware of the Great Fire, and several people (including me) have asked if it will be included. I would suspect it will be if we get a series 10. The 1902 fire is not one that is mentioned (I didn't know about it and my Great Grandfather was part of both the Fire Department and the Orange Lodge). I suspect that would be because, despite the loss of life, it only involved one building and was isolated on the waterfront. The 1904 fire destroyed a huge part of downtown Toronto and had a major economic effect on the City. Cheers The waterfront was part of the SH4 beat! Not all of it.......even in 1902, it would have been quite a long stretch of land. SH4 was in the part of Toronto known as Cabbagetown, which is on the eastern side of the old city.......without knowing where George Street was, that fire could have been anywhere along the harbour.....

Well we do have a historian who has looked at these old maps, so we can ask her when she drifts in. For a while we were working on a project to make an MM Google Map.

What do you mean, don't count as human? Martians! I'm still not following...the s1 guy fell out of a blimp 'accidentally', in s8 one guy was bashed in the head, the other was shot with a rod, and the third one died due to his own stupidity...

All convenient explanations. George knows there is something going on in Markham... Anyway, just heard on the radio: you're right about the X-Files reboot!

Yay MM got mentioned in the Metro today. They were saying it's slipped under the radar. Hopefully by being mentioned as no 3 of programmes to watch today more people will watch. But it is up against Broadchurch and Silent Witness so it might have a bit of a struggle. However any mention has to be a good thing.

I'm glad they waited until now to mention it - I'm thinking MM will have a stronger second half of the season than first. This was a risky way to stack the eps though - hopefully any viewers lost didn't pledge allegiance to new shows.
