Remember how all summer we were working ourselves up over how traditional William was going to handle marrying a woman of means: how they were going to handle money, whether he was going to feel like a "kept man", whether they were going to have servants, where they were going to live, how much William's manhood was going to be threatened by this situation... Well, weren't we ever punked! Instead of feeling threatened over the challenges to his values, William has instead decided to try his best to Embrace the Future. (I suppose a good part of that has to do with embracing Julia as a symbol of the future). William wants to be modern about everything. They are living in an unconventional way (hotel), in a two-career marriage, where traditional sex roles may be reversed at any time. I mentioned in another thread that when William started talking about Modern Marriage, I suddenly had a vision of him seeing Marriage on display at the World's Fair alongside futuristic visions of Flash Gordon rocket ships and laser cannons. He's seriously living science fiction.

All along he was this traditional man that wouldn't compromise Julia (until they were married) and now they are married it's like he's become a different man.

All along he was this traditional man that wouldn't compromise Julia (until they were married) and now they are married it's like he's become a different man. William has made a very lucky marriage in that respect. Technology and culture were changing very rapidly around him, but it's extremely difficult for human worldviews and habits to change. The one thing that can cause people to remodel their inner selves rapidly is love. Once William made a whole-hearted commitment to Julia, he could literally see the whole world in a new light. It does seem like he was holding back part of himself and that commitment until they were married, though.

They are living in an unconventional way (hotel), in a two-career marriage, where traditional sex roles may be reversed at any time. Apparently it wasn't unusual for newlyweds to move into a hotel in those times. It was unusual for the wife to maintain her 'career', it was expected that she would take over the running of the household.
