James Pendrick is one of my favorite characters on MM. It's a shame that MM was too small a show for him to be more of a regular. He does have so much in common with William. If Julia wasn't William's OTP, Pendrick was a fair contender in that category. It was a poignant in-joke to see lonely William, who could have been best bros with Pendrick, cost Pendrick his fortune and his legacy invention every time. not to mention dallying a bit with his wife
I didn't really like Pendrick as movie director (besides the patent war with Edison). But I did like to see Pendrick in conjuction with Edison. I think Tesla would be even more interesting. Pendrick and Tesla doing something with mad science, wahahahaha. This time William has the fortune (shared with Julia). Hope Pendrick's return doesn't entail any poetic justice. We often talk about wanting to see Sally Pendrick return as a shadowy Queen of Villains (perhaps with Leslie as her besotted lawyer), but no one mentions James. Just wanted to throw out some love for him, too. Love his suave suits, his clever inventions, his grandiose ways, and his willingness to repeatedly forgive William for pulling the rug out from under him. Hopefully Pendrick made a new fortune off his Filmed Adventures of William Murdoch, and he can now invest them in his next great invention! (What did Tesla invent c.1902...?)

Is it too early for Pendrick to invent television. Television as we know it came a bit later but there were some experimenting with transmitting moving pictures c1902.

Pendrick is a movie director in Season 7, so this would be a natural step for him. Tesla was also THE proponent of early radio. Also, Pendrick used to be an architect. Perhaps he could do some more building in Toronto as well...

If he builds a skyscraper they can have giant mad scientist tesla coils on top though! I'm surprised there hasn't been more Tesla, though. He's such a figure of conspiracy and intrigue!

Probably inventing something and then making a bad decision which leaves him bankrupt and without undo credit-again.

Probably inventing something and then making a bad decision which leaves him bankrupt and without undo credit-again. And that's it in a nutshell. It's not that Edison was the most brilliant inventor of all time, he was also a brilliant businessman, and that combo was the magic ticket that apparently allowed his name and inventions to dominate. Most inventors aren't very good businessmen. Of course, there's plenty of evidence to support that Edison didn't invent a lot things-but his employees at Edison labs did.

Edison got cheated and sabotaged quite a few times himself: he learned his lessons the hard way. I find the early electricity/invention wars look a lot like the early Silicon Valley entrepreneur wars: it's what happens before regulation catches up with innovation. If someone can become a billionaire fast enough to get enough patent-trolling lawyers on *their* side, they win. Hence, Mark Zuckerberg. I think MM could do even more with this than they've done already. But I'm glad they've even referenced it. When I learned through researching Mark Twain that Toronto was the American legal/business outpost for the business empire, I realized the possibilities for MM were actually through the roof in this area. Everyone seeking European patents and copyrights would have to go to Toronto.

I think it's 50/50 on that. It was Pendrick who pushed his plane into Niagra Falls, and it was Pendrick who got all defensive at Edision in "The Filmed Adventures of William Murdoch" Episode. But Murdoch messed things up by arresting Pendrick in "Who Killed the Electic Carriage?" preventing him from stopping the whole buy out thing, and then the whole Sally Pendrick thing.

Pendrick's plane would have ended up being used for military purposes if William had not intervened, but he would have gotten the credit and success for it. He would not have been put in the position to make the moral choice to push the plane over Niagara Falls without William calling attention to the Government backers. Regarding the Filmed Adventures, Pendrick had good reason to be defensive - Edison was an infamous patent troll in real life. Let's hope that film succeeded even though his lead actor was shot, Edison hired away most of his crew, and his pro editor turned out to be a murderess!

I've wanted him to invent an early submarine for some time now. And we know the shipwreck episode is coming up so that would be the perfect opportunity to have Murdoch in NS by the sea.
But considering Pendrick is possibly still in film and Prop Monkey said he wasn't working on a sub, I'm guessing that's not going to happen ever, and if it did, it would have to be yet another invention that got destroyed so that the government didn't use it for war purposes. Still, not nearly as annoying a plot device as Gillies constant Houdini acts.

Historical anachronism solved, Gillies plot device taken care of!
