Instead of joining the Pinkertons, George sets up his own detective agency and affiliates with Julia's private criminology lab...

Lol, that kinda sounds like what Castle is doing this year...but I'm sure MM would do a much better job of it. If he does that though then he's not a man of his word. He could've joined Tess in S4 and done the same thing...well, it's not too late. I can't see it being a long term plot line though. He'd only do it if he asked for a promotion (cuz he was thinking of starting a family with Edna) and was flat out refused by the new chief constable, and then there'd be hijinks for the first two eps of S9. That's how I'd see it going down.

That's how I'd see it going down. Yes, I would see this as a temporary plotline for George or even William to "shake things up". Both of them deserve a promotion. Neither can get it under the current political and structural circumstances. The only way to make their value known is to strike out on their own. But of course the show would not be the same if they aren't working for Station House 4, so I wouldn't want that to be a permanent change of status, like Julia moving off to Psychiatry Lala Land. I agree the thought of starting a family with Edna and needing "family man responsibility" resources would be strong motivation for making a move, though.
