Kristian Bruun (Slugger Jackson) has posted on Twitter that MM is the most popular show in Finland........ I read at some point last year they got a ratings return with 1/5 of Finnish ppl watching. This doesn't surprise me given the education and tastes of Fins I have encountered. Some Fins first introduced me to Sherlock.

Hi, Murdoch Mysteries was certainly one of the most watched shows in Finland in Aug-Dec 2014, but I don't think it is fair to say it was number one at any point. For Example Downton Abbey beat MM, but only with a small margin. About half a million viewers tuned in for every MM episode, which is a lot when there are only a 5 million plus of us :-). But in all fairness, Doc Martin (With Martin Clunes) is now in the same time slot and draws as many viewers as MM.
YLE (The Finnish Broadcasting Company) only started broadcasting MM last autumn and showed seasons 1-7 during a few months, one episode every weekday at 5 p.m. It was wonderful! A fresh new episode almost every day. And after that feast we are going to be left languishing until next autumn - that is when YLE plan to air season 8.

Thanks for clarifying the Finnish ratings situation. BTW, I have enormous respect for Finnish taste in entertainment due to recs I've received in the past. Do you have any idea if the version you see is cut down like the pathetcally butchered American syndication?

I sometimes question the entertainment preferences of my fellow countrymen (and women), but I guess you've encountered smart people with good taste... To answer your question, I don't really know. How long are the "butchered" episodes? The ones we had were maybe 44 minutes in average. Longer ones in early seasons and slightly shorter for seasons 6 and 7. I did not even know there were different versions!

Later parts of the series are not going to make any sense to viewers who have only seen the syndicated version. William and Julia barely have any contact in the version we get.

Oh what I would pay to see someone go from watching the US "editied" versions to Holy Matrimony Murdoch! They be like WHUUTT THEY GET MARRIED!

That really is butchering the episodes. We definitely have had the shippy bits in the episodes and I think that aspect is quite important for many people watching (including me) and it makes the show appealing for a wider audience. I cannot even imagine the show without the ship. It would be totally different! And the later episodes would indeed be rather weird (and short!) if all shippiness was cut out. Why would anyone think that was a good idea in the first place?

Why would anyone think that was a good idea in the first place? I can't imagine what the editors are thinking. I wonder who in the process makes these edits? It's someone on the American side. Is it the TV stations themselves to accommodate their individual commercial schedules? If so, our local station is never going to get a foothold audience with those kind of cuts.
