Lots of people maintain 2 residences. I just hate that great Canadian talent feels the need to head south of the border. It comes down to exposure. Sure MM is seen all over the world but in the entertainment psyche that doesn't count for anything if it's not big in the U.S. Too true unfortunately. To be crass, I think it has to do with money, too. Actors on popular TV series in the US are paid millions per episode. It's easier to define what they are worth and demand it (at least once they are "A List"). Also, by hobnobbing in LA he makes Murdoch Mysteries better known here. He's an executive producer now with some evangelizing responsibilities. Murdoch Mysteries has almost zero recognition in the US right now. If Yannick gets some red carpet coverage, MM will as well.

You know my thoughts on that snacky. I'm fine with the US never getting to know it on a wider basis just in case someone decides they want a piece of the pie. It would destroy it.

His career to date has been in both, so I think he has set himself up to be able to work wherever he can.....it isn't unusual for successful actors to maintain 2 residences..... Too bad Santa Monica is far away. I don't get a chance to stalk MM events even when they come to the U.S.!

We already have the Ovation run and the syndicated version nationally. The question is whether it will get better times/channels for syndication - and perhaps whether there will be a less butchered version.

I will grant you that the syndicated versions are butchered to all get out, but are the Ovation eps? I'm not so sure they are-being a cable station, they don't run as many commercials as a broadcast station, and therefore, don't need the cuts that small time stations need.

Not really if it never really takes off especially because of the butchered versions. You're already getting a taste of what I mean about US intervention in shows.... Sorry!

I quite agree......unfortunately, I think any investment by a major US network would mean the end of MM, as we know it anyway. For starters, Canadian television is more permissive than the US, so you'd see an end to Brackenreid's bloody hells and buggerlugs, plus I think it would get changed from being the quirky, Canadian-centic series it is and made more accessible to a general American audience. Sorry, but I'd rather it stay limited in the US if it means keeping it......

I've been against US intervention in anything Canadian ever since. They bring big money and usually the Canadian companies can't resist then they bring big demands.

After Hodge told me that story I totally agree! But we aren't talking about US investment in production of MM (hopefully). We're talking about raising the profile of MM in the US to sell the syndicated version. That grows the pot of money (under Shaftesbury control) that can be used to produce the show and pay the actors). btw, I think all of Brackenreid's swearing is surviving in syndication. US TV has become a lot more permissive in recent years - and most people wouldn't even know what the British terms mean. What's being cut out are the "irrelevant" shippy scenes. I totally agree that the quest for "accessibility" would involve destroying the quirkyness that makes MM interesting - hence it would no longer be "cult", and there would be no point in watching it.

If the Ovation eps are cut, they aren't cut in the same way as the syndicated eps. I started watching MM on Ovation and got my taste for "Jilliam" there.

But if the profile is raised a US company may become interested in investing in the production and that's what I'm worried about. It's what happened last time. A channel that was airing the show decided they'd like to invest in it then demanded changes so huge that it wasn't the same show any more. They wanted it to appeal to a younger audience and be much 'hipper'.

I would hope CBC would up it's own ante, realizing that MM is Toronto's show, and that its place is to show off Canada to the world. That's why CBC bought it, and that's why it's now a shiny jewel on CBC's crown.

I suspect if a US network offered to invest they may go for it, as long as Shaftesbury agreed. They would have to have some sort of clause that said the show would be under strict Canadian control and I don't see anyone putting money in agreeing to that!
