Original air date - 14th February 2008
Detective Murdoch attends a seance hosted by Miss Sarah Pensall, here he is told the location of a recently murdered young woman. The body of Iris Winston, a member of the Toronto Paranormal Society, is found exactly where Sarah Pensall said it would be. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes Detective novels, assists Murdoch in his investigation while he is in Toronto to make a speech on spiritualism. Murdoch believes that Mediums are charlatans but his beliefs are shaken somewhat when Miss Pensall claims to have a message from his fiancée, who dies from consumption over a year ago.

I was re-watching this episode today.
I just realised that there is a BIG anachronism.
At the start of the episode, Murdoch calls him "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle".
In the 1890s, Doyle was still holding the title of Dr. Conan Doyle.
He did not receive his knighthood (for services during the Boer War; 1899-1902) until 1902.

Hmm that's interesting, I would have thought that would have been one thing they would get right

He's also about 20 years older than Doyle would have been in the 1890's. Doyle would have been the same age as Murdoch, in his 30's.

Aha, really? Oh well, I still really liked his character. I guess they really wanted to have Geraint Wyn Davies play the role or something (and for good reason).
Fav quote: *Julia using a funny voice* "I will return with a message! How a man goes from devout Catholic to that is beyond me." *laughs* "Beyond me!" Murdoch is not amused. "That's funny!"

I wondered about that myself. And just how old is the actor who played Doyle? He didnt look all that old. GG

GG Shangas is our resident antiques collector, btw, and he would be very grateful to talk about anything besides play-by-play analysis of William and Julia's relationship. *hugs Shangas*

Geraint Wyn Davies would have been 50 in 2007 ... former GWD fan here.

In speaking of antiques, I love that William kept Liza's silver horse in his pocket - and I always wondered if there was a certain point in which he stopped keeping it in his pocket. I kept waiting for an episode in which he released the silver horse. Perhaps it was supposed to be this episode.
Anyway, I'd be curious to know what became of the silver horse now. That necklace also revealed William to be a very sentimental guy, though he doesn't exactly give that impression!
Also, in the MMAS thread we've been having a random discussion about eerie psychic experiences. I wish I could add a poll within a thread, because I'm curious about how many people have had the experience of predicting something a few minutes before it happened, in a way that absolutely could not be explained by coincidence or subconscious suggestion.
In other words: does Ms. Pensell have a "gift" or can she merely access, through reduced inhibitions, something we all have the potential for?

The other day the MMFPOfficial twitter posted that if you watch an episode a night you will have watched the entire series by the time season 9 is out. I decided to do this. I also thought I'd post a blurb in the episode thread when I watch an ep as well. I've already watched the previous three and this is where I'm at.
I might post 5 things every time about the episode. Probably just little things I enjoyed on this viewing.
1. It gets me every time how different George & the Inspector look. George looks 12! 2. I often forget about William's clever quips. I loved when Doyle offered to take William for a drink and he replied "I think I've had enough spirits for one night". 3. William sure likes to suck face in parks! 4. I also want to know what became of the silver horse necklace! Surely he still has it. 5. It cracked me up when the Inspector was swatting flies on the painting in the Station House!

Because I'm being treated to these older episodes in the form of US syndication, I get very maudlin and grumpy about them. I campaigned very hard to bring MM to the US - and now what I see on the TV often has a lot of the best bits cut out! But in principle I agree about the quips. I think there may be less of these in later seasons. But Fallenbelle has also established there is less screentime in general, so there might be less time for quips to occur. Older episodes do tend to seem more "clever" to me, though. More recent episodes tend to rely on stereotypes of MM "quirkyness". You aren't the only one to wonder about that horse necklace - it's come up in threads before. George isn't the only one who looks young! I was trying to figure out why Henry looks so young. He didn't have sideburns yet! Someone came up with the original airing order, and I believe this was supposed to be the first episode.

What channel has it been airing on? Julia's sense of humor has diminished as well and she's generally got more screen time now. William might even crack a smile at her jokes these days.
