Because I'm being treated to these older episodes in the form of US syndication, I get very maudlin and grumpy about them. I campaigned very hard to bring MM to the US - and now what I see on the TV often has a lot of the best bits cut out! But in principle I agree about the quips. I think there may be less of these in later seasons. But Fallenbelle has also established there is less screentime in general, so there might be less time for quips to occur. Older episodes do tend to seem more "clever" to me, though. More recent episodes tend to rely on stereotypes of MM "quirkyness". You aren't the only one to wonder about that horse necklace - it's come up in threads before. George isn't the only one who looks young! I was trying to figure out why Henry looks so young. He didn't have sideburns yet! Someone came up with the original airing order, and I believe this was supposed to be the first episode. I posted a list of an alternative order that came from someone with European DVD's. This ep is 102, Glass Ceiling is 101. I like the earlier eps more they definitely had a different feel to them that has been lost in the laters seasons. A bit rough around the edges but definitely clever.

IMHO MM may have passed peak "polish" as well. That would require tight plotting as well as slick visual editing. Season 8 felt a bit like unknit yarn. Looking forward to Season 9!

The American syndicated version airs on many local TV stations. You can find it in almost any TV market near a major urban area, but it will probably be airing on weekends, very late it night because it is purchased during local airtime (i.e., when you often see infomercials). The syndicated version is radically cut to make more room for commercials. Usually Jilliam parts get cut since this is seen as not central to the mystery. Also, it seems like the video is also speeded up a bit. The way to find out when it airs is to go to TV Guide online, put in your TV provider (cable or satellite), and see what comes up. www.tvguide.com/listings/
