Quite interesting. My husband's ancestors came here from Ireland during the famine and had a hard go of it even in to the last century. His father had a pretty tough childhood. But as seems to be the way with many newcomers, hard work and a good attitude paid off and he did quite well for himself. On another note, my husband and I went to St. Michael's College: that is where we met and got married. I can see how the establishment of the college in 1910 would have benefited the Irish Catholics of the day immensely. I like that MM occasionally addresses the situation of Catholics in Toronto: it is certainly true about that the city was very protestant, even up to the middle of the 20th century. Thanks Lizmic!
