Just north of Toronto is the historic town Unionville, which has been used by MM for filming (the bandshell was used for the McKinley assassination scene). News has just come out that one of the old buildings, the former Queen's Hotel, built in 1870, is on fire and in danger of collapsing: www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/unionville-s-historic-queen-s-hotel-building-hit-by-fire-1.3000169
Very sad news as it is a lovely old building and is a focal point of the historic Main Street.....here's hoping it can be salvaged and rebuilt.

So sad to hear;
When I first visited Toronto and its surroundings, my friend who lives in Markham brought me to Unionville, and it is so pretty there, I'm so sorry to read about that building :/

Australia is a screwed up bloody country.
We'll tear down old hotels. And beautiful theaters from the 1800s. And nobody gives a shit.
Some 'historic' pub burns down and suddenly everyone in town is wearing a black armband. Typical Australia. We tear down our history and yet some beer-swilling grog-hole goes up and everyone freaks out like it's the End of the World.
A pity about the hotel.

Unfortunately, Shangas, we tend to be the same way......last month, a store which had been at one of the main intersections in Downtown Toronto for over 100 years, and was a landmark was torn down on a weekend, before anyone could fight it.......we are getting an 80 story glass tower in its place......yippee, we need another glass box......there are parts of Canada which have done a good job of preserving history, like Quebec City, which is an absolute jewel, and Old Montreal, but Toronto, no......
Cheers

What's the point in worrying? It's too late for Toronto and has been for years.

I have been to Toronto. I don't recall seeing much history.
I also went to Quebec City. That place was like a Fairytale city. Especially with the ice and snow everywhere. It was beautiful...

When were you in Toronto?

I felt like that when I visited Santa Fe (also during the snow season). But that probably just shows I don't travel much.

Really? It's prettier than Montreal? That's the one that always gets the tourist fanfare in the US.

Really? It's prettier than Montreal? That's the one that always gets the tourist fanfare in the US. It is very different than Montreal (which is my second favourite Canadian city) in a lot of ways.......Montreal is a large, cosmopolitan city, with an old section preserved, Old Montreal and the Old Port. It is the second largest city in Canada after Toronto, and the 2 have a long standing rivalry, which is friendly most of the time.....Montreal certainly has Toronto beat in the hockey department.......Quebec City is the only walled city left in North America, possibly the oldest in Canada, it had its 400th anniversary recently, and the whole old section has been preserved as much as possible......it is on the UNESCO list of heritage sites and is the home of the Plains of Abraham, the most important battlefield on Canadian soil. (St John's, Newfoundland also claims oldest city status....)
Both cities have wonderful restaurants.....if you ever visit either or both, don't bother to pack your diet.......you will eat very well.....Montreal has more restaurants per capita than any other city in NA.......
Cheers (I am now very hungry, again.....)

Really? It's prettier than Montreal? That's the one that always gets the tourist fanfare in the US. Quebec City is much more French than Montreal. When we visited both cities two years ago, I found I used more French in Quebec than in Montreal. Both cities are gorgeous though, and lizmic is right about the food! That is sad news about the Unionville fire. That is a really nice little town that has tried to preserve some of its history. Toronto seems bent on bulldozing its history into oblivion.
