Original air date - 21st February 2008
Wendell Merrick was killed in the church office on his wedding day. Murdoch learns that Wendell was to wed Eunice McGinty. The wedding was a sham, after the autopsy Murdoch learns that Merrick was a homosexual and his marriage would inherit his half of his father's estate. The obvious conclusion would be that Merrick's lover killed him in a fit of jealousy but when his lover committs suicide Murdoch suspects that there's an alterier motive.

"Even leaving the Bible aside-" "Yes, could we?" "It goes against nature." "Oh rubbish! Nature is full of omnisexual behaviour! Have you never seen male dogs at play?" "But those are dogs." "We are all animals, William!"

The episode where I decided Julia was my favorite character, after hearing the quote mentioned just above.

As an historian I really liked this episode because of its authenticity to the beliefs and mores of the time the show is taking place. Shows usually change the history to placate modern sensibilities. The authenticty of MM is only matched by that of Downton Abbey who has an historian around to keep things true to the times. Bravo!
Season 1 is what hooked me on the series. GG

The writers have played fast and loose with more people and inventions since then.

A true period piece, like DA, cannot do that. (It's also one of the things I adore about MM. George and his "potato cooking room", lol.

Day 5 of me watching 1 ep a day til season 9. I get so excited to watch and post about it. Every day when I watch these I feel as if I'm going to just blab about Julia's jokes. They kill me.
1. "He died of a lucky blow to the head... or unlucky, depending on your point of view." Morgue Julia is the best Julia.
2. "I'm from Sheffield, I can't pronounce my bloody Ls!" George being hilarious is one constant I am so happy about.
3. That outfit that he wears, the pansy they add to his jacket, his awkward tennis swing and the Inspector quipping back, "You'll be fine." This scene cracks me up. Still surprised William was willing to do this at all!
4. Like everyone else I loved the conversation between William & Julia when she tells him "We're all animals!"
5. The twist at the end was pretty great, I never expected her to be someone else. I always find it funny how they always cave when William tells them how he WILL find out what happened. These criminals should know better than to admit things!
bonus: I love scenes when William is at confession.

William is, amazingly, up for anything, if it will get the crime solved. Regarding William's open-mindedness, I once developed a theory about this based on him being a charity student at a Jesuit school. I can't quite recapture that train of thought at the minute, but I thought you'd be amused given your appreciation for Confession!William.
