Why does he take dance lessons in the movie? I can see why he was reluctant when the Inspector gave him tickets to the Dinosaur Ball! I think he took dance lessons in the movies, and the books, to try and meet women. He wasn't as attached to Liza's memory in the books or movies and remember in the books he's hell bent on losing his virginity. Agreed on why he took dance lessons in the movie-I think that was his way of getting back out there if you will. I'll add more in the movie thread.

A) Some creepy time warp has happened in Toronto. Possibly a pocket dimension wrapped within a quantum string was involved. This time-space warpy effect eminated from The House of Eternal Return. George is the only one who knows it happened because he found an object from Movie 1895 glowing on William's desk.
B) Was William blocking the memory of previous dance lessons with Julia? It seemed like he stopped trying to meet women as well. Or he was so humiliated he decided never to try thar way again. I do wonder if William was officially looking for a wife at that point to make the middle class picture complete.

Agreed was his way of getting back out there In the books he also didn't seem like a "Great Detective" or Sherlock Holmes to me. He was more a dogged schlepper getting his job done in a grimy world.

Agreed and he certainly wasn't Gadget!William in the books either. I've just started reading the first book again, I'm going to compile a database of facts from the books to compare to the movies and show.

Hoping the science fiction Reconciliation of All Worlds comes out as a web series... It might end up looking something like a cross between Being John Malkovich, Dark City, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen...

I've found the entire collection on e-reader for $51.99, and I think I'm going to treat myself to them as a graduation gift. I can't buy them yet, because I'll be too tempted to read them, and forgo my last assignments. Because Murdoch Mysteries>Scholarly Journal Bull $hit. It's no contest. None. The struggle is real.

Day 6 of watching an episode til season 9! Another gem of season 1! Heck all of season 1 are gems.
1. William was really great with Phillip. He will no doubt be a great father. I wonder what he did with his pocket watch from Liza.
2. I love that Julia is so willing to put William in his place when it came to his father. However, I certainly don't blame William for the way he behaved.
3. That ankle action, though! I just love how uncomfortable William was through their conversation. & I love so much when they do experiments together.
4. I am SO glad we got to see this part of William's past. Definitely happy William listened to his father at the end. Hopefully that gave him a little more closure on the issue.
5. I'm impressed William was able to pick up on Julia's hint at going to Toronto Island together! I wouldn't have been surprised if he had thanked her for the suggestion and went on his way.

If Harry wasn't responsible for William's mother's death then William was. The log she slipped on was there because he'd been playing in the woodpile and had spread the logs all over.

I always thought that was a bit of blame shifting on Harry's part and rather crappy to blame it on William as he did. Father of the year material right there...

The ankle action? Behold the unbuttoned blouse action! And OMG the direct discussion of male body parts: those forbidden subjects must have lit up all William's circuits and burnt them out all at once! During the early episodes MM hadn't decided on its formula yet, so each episode experiments a bit. The really weird thing is that the writers or the directors seemed to be considering going in some sort of "cheesecake" direction. You really see it in Still Waters with all the buff shirtless guys. Julia comes across as quite a tease in Season 1 and then again in Season 7. In other seasons she comes across as more anxious - possibly worried about becoming a spinster because she had waited around for William.

Did the TV version say she tripped over a log? I'd think we'd see more confession from William if he realized he'd been displacing his own guilt onto his father all these years.

It wasn't mentioned but it was shown in Harry's memory of it. Harry didn't blame William he just told him she slipped, he didn't hit her, William possibly doesn't even know it was his fault. I thought Harry came across quite well actually and that's why William had this new appreciation of who his father was and why he had a lot of thinking to do. His father wasn't perfect but he wasn't as bad as William, and Susanna who I thought was quite brutal in her condemnation of Harry, especially as a Mother Superior, had originally thought. I wonder if the writers realized the can of worms they could have opened with that.

I... never really thought of that before. Huh. Poor William Harry handled the explanation quite tactfully IMO. Yes, she tripped on a piece of wood from the pile that William had messed up but her fall was clearly an accident by any standard. No need to lay blame on a child who was traumatized by the consequences even if he is a man. Perhaps this is why William is so gentle when talking to children and the mentally disabled. He can be quite ruthless about getting information out of people but I have always loved the way he handled Phillip as well as Charlotte Taylor and Lydia Howland.
