Before Turkey, Asia Minor (or Anatolia) was home to the Ottoman Empire. Would Murdoch have called the first victim "Turkish" ? Welcome! I think the term Turkish was used. I think of the candy Turkish Delight and the scene in Amadeus where Mozart's wife is wearing Turkish costumes. Perhaps the people were ethnically referred to as Turks?

The word 'turk' goes back centuries, so I wouldn't see why not.

Late add, I know, but the people of that time were well aware of the different ethnicities in the Ottoman empire: Turks, Kurds, Armenians.
Murdoch would have been well aware of events over there as a man named Frank Lenz was killed in eastern Turkey during an attempt to bicycle alone around the world in 1894. Another cyclist adventurer named Sachtleben attempted to find Lenz and uncovered evidence of what is now known as the Armenian Genocide in his search. He made lecture tours about it after that.
That would make for a great episode for MM as the Turkish government denied the killings (and still does): murder and revenge abd ethnic hatred between immigrant Armenian and Turk or Kurd citizens of Toronto.
