How about when William first encounters electricity? Can to a really scienc-y episode/mystery.. Or First days with the constabulary or even a flashback to when he met the person who inspired him to take up being a police officer--I think at a logging camp...maybe that man dies in Toronto and William is assigned the case or he turns up in some way? , first meeting with George or the inspector? Love to see George and his Aunties... OMG! Someone needs to write the fic wherein William encounters electricity for the first time! I am DYING for some more background on William's logging camp days! That is a huge gaping hole, imo.

Love to see George and his Aunties... I like that idea a lot! William's time in the logging camp is merely a mention but I'd like to know how it shaped him as a man. Suzannah referenced William leaving as a 17 year old off to the logging camps to make his way in the world...what happened? Who had been the constable? What made William decide that the time was right to move on? (Sadly, I think they would need to have a different actor for such a flashback because our very handsome Yannick cannot pass for a 17-20 year old.)

I wondered if Julia's mom had money as a legacy/in her Will that supported Julia's education or even Julia sought a sponsor of her own--perhaps a sympathetic patron or group of women? That was not unheard of then. As for her and dad--I imagine arguments at the dining room table-- both too direct, verbal, strong headed and Ruby learning to be more subtle--and still get what she wants by going ahead and doing things anyway without being confrontational--perhaps after the debacle with Julia Lionel Ogden lightened up on Ruby in order not to lose her as well--Ruby certainly know how to charm men (Julia not so much) that would play out in their father's attitudes would it not? Also play out psychologically with Julia needing to "leave" when things get difficult in relationships. I'd like to see an origins story about Julia and Ruby's girlhood and relationship when W&J talk about being parents...there could be "flashback" sequences for both W&J about that... rg I forgot to say a hearty "Welcome" to you Ruthie Green! So glad to have your very eloquent phrasing and interesting ideas here! I had never really considered that Julia's mother could have left a financial legacy. Didn't a woman's fortune automatically go to her husband? I'm trying to remember how the rules went vis a vis inherited wealth through the female line. Perhaps Julia's maternal grandfather left a portion of his wealth to her directly. A further study of Julia and Ruby's childhood would be a fascinating sub-plot! Perhaps the governess who made the girls sleep in their corsets is murdered....

Are you volunteering? I don't know very much about electricity. In fact, he might not have encountered it until he came to Toronto to work for the Constabulary as I seriously doubt Father Keegan had it, or that he first saw it in a logging camp or ranch. Is it something he would have learned about as a schoolboy even though it was new? This is a question for Shangas, and why I can't be trusted to write about such things. I'd have to spend days on research on when electricity became widely available in residential and or commercial settings, and then study how it actually worked. I'm afraid I'm more like Edison Jr. than Edison or Tesla.

Maybe we can colaborate on a story? (OK did I post this right?) --rg Yes, let's do this! As for posting on a reply, there will be a box with the original quote, and space at the bottom. Just move your cursor to the space below the quote box, and type your reply. If you need more explanation, let me know.

So I heartily agree with many of these ideas. I too want to see: - Julia getting into university and medical school, and perhaps a bit on how Ruby got away to become the globe-trotting journalist
- William meeting that former constable at the logging camp and getting into police work
- The Brackenreids emigrating to Canada, including the whys and wherefores
- Also, how George managed to avoid becoming a chimney sweep and instead joined the constabulary. Higgins too, for that matter.
@ Fallenbelle I don't know if you can find them where you live (I had to see them on YouTube, since not all BBC docs are for sale in the US), but there was a "Hidden Killers" series hosted by Suzannah Lipscomb. The Edwardian episode went into the electrical hazards as electricity became incorporated into domestic life. You might want to start there. Oh, and as for casting Mr. Bisson as the much-younger Murdoch, it might be technologically possible, though likely too pricey for the producers' budget. If you watch the first Captain America movie (and the DVD extras wherein the process is explained), they were able to have the same actor portray Steve Rogers both before and after the serum-induced transformation. My personal impression was that the scrawny pre-serum Steve looked younger to boot (actually, the phrase "baby bird" popped into my head as I watched it the first time). IIRC the actor had some sort of marking on his chest as an eye target for his co-stars, so that they could look at him at the right angle to support the illusion that he was shorter. BTW I'm not ignoring you lot. Real Life has been getting in the way, including a coworker who quit without notice and a tear in my right retina.

It's no fun when real life gets in the way of your fun! Thanks for the recommendation-I love those sorts of docs. If you haven't already seen it, The Poisoner's Handbook is also quite good. It's about one of the earliest CSI labs in NYC starting in the 1910's. www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/poisoners/

Thanks. So far so good on the eye (thanks to barrier laser procedure), though I have to go back for checkups. I'm very nearsighted (we're it not for high-index lenses, I'd be sporting the proverbial soda-bottle-bottom glasses) and the vitreous is pulling away from the retina, hence the tear. I'm told the shape of my eyes contributes to the detachment. As for The Poisoner's Handbook, I did stream that one and enjoyed it very much--am thinking of getting it for my tablet if not on DVD.
