Here's a question: Is Julia having PTSD or guilt because perhaps she really did kill Eva. Sure everyone thought it was self defense, but what if it wasn't... The cast and Peter Mitchell all describe Julia's issue as PTSD (from Unlocking MM at CBC Oct. 1st). Even if Julia didn't know about Worsley's death, she DID know that Eva Pierce had already tried to kill her AND had abducted William, ergo she would not stop until Julia was dead. The line between calculated criminality and psychosis was admittedly blurred in Eva's case but Julia was neither in a position to step back enough to consider it nor would this kind of behaviour be considered anything but criminal at the time IMO. I don't see how Julia would see her actions as anything other than self defense, just as she did with Harlan Orgille. Julia killed them both but it was clearly self defense each time. I agree that it was self defense/self preservation, but Julia premeditated it all the same. Really, I suspect that it's quite similar to what Brax/ or any soldier faces in combat: Kill, or be killed. But that still doesn't make it easy, and I imagine that it must leave a mark on your soul. Just look at all the troops with PTSD now and to be frank, throughout history.

It will be interesting to see how this all unwinds on the show--they left so many ambiguous things from last season (and from other ones too) Can we say J shot Eva to kill or disable? (J is a good shot--maybe she did hit where she intended to) She would need a distance weapon in her injured condition because hand to hand would disadvantage her, and if she knew Eva had a distance weapon (gun) it just evens the score. IMO she meant to end Eva, or at least that is one way to look at it, but there are other interpretations--just look how we are all speculating!! Nice job on the show writer's part I think. J does not just have PTSD--halllucinations are not sx, but enough stress can produce psychosis--I am thinking the alcohol is self medication & maybe they will come up with an explanation for the visions (side effects of a medication she is taking? (Opiates can do that in some people). She could have seemed to recover and then WHAM the PTSD sx arose (that's why it is "POST" traumatic--some other event couod have sparked them off--a body she work on in the morgue....) She has PTSD Sx before after being buried alive (nightmares) for which she has shock tx. New traumas bring up old ones... Love it all and we'll see what they do...rg I hear what you're saying about hallucinations, but I wonder if Julia is really "seeing" Eva, or if she's just haunted by what she's done, and these hallucinations are really just the best way to show that on tv? Nice to see you here!

Which is why I think Brackenreid is the most attuned to what she is going through and the most sympathetic....he has been through both as a soldier and as a police officer, and seen the problems many of his fellow soldiers and police officers have had throughout the years.......(sort of makes you wonder about the causes of former Chief Constable Stockton's Alzheimer's, doesn't it.......)

I thought it was a quite a mundane episode until the last minute. Hopefully that's a sign that part 2 is more exciting. I hope the writers don't forget Julia has killed in self defense before and dealt with that. I understand her guilt is making her believe she murdered Eva, but the viewers saw what happened and we know it was justifiable self defense when she stabbed Eva. I expect Julia will soon come to accept that and her William can talk it through, and Julia can recover from her trauma.
Sorry to say, I still don't care about George/Nina and I still don't think they have any chemistry or are a believable romance. I also found it unrealistic that Rebecca would have the qualifications or the authority to be attending crime scenes by herself. That is stretching things and Julia needs to the sole coroner.
Higgins will probably believe he's started the fire with his cigar and that will be amusing. I'm leaning towards the bachelors friend being the debutante killer.

I wanted to hold back a bit before making any comments, so now I will.
This episode really wasn't one of my favourites. As Lady Grantham's brother Harold said: "Standing in a ballroom full of debutantes isn't my idea of a party". Or words to that effect.
I fully admit to watching the entire episode in a sort of half-attentive haze. Higgins with his cigars were mildly humorous, as well as George knowing all about the girls. I found Lady Atherly entirely distasteful. I firmly believe that she'd been a friend of Lionel Ogden, the former Dr. Ogden - not one of Julia's. After all, she seemed closer to his age than hers. Julia's probably just putting up with her visit.
As Rebecca James said: "I had no idea how dangerous it could be, being young, rich and white".
Actually it could be pretty bloody dangerous. And things didn't change just because you were rich. A lot of girls often married against their own wishes, to men they didn't like, purely to advance their family's (parents, most likely) prospects (which I strongly suspect is the case here).
That was just how it was done in those days. And they KNEW that was how it was done. There was no point in disguising it. Don't forget that this was a time when women had VERY few rights - if they didn't have a man around, they were stuffed. So the pressure to marry was REAL and it was HIGH.
I agree that the inspector would know better than most, what Julia is going through. He was a soldier, and he's been a policeman a lot longer than William. He'd be aware of all the shocks and stresses that their kind have to go through. He's also been married much longer than William.
One thing I will say - Alzheimers is not 'caused' or 'triggered' or 'unleashed' by anything. It just happens. Alzheimers is a degrading of the brain's ability to function. There are ways of treating it and slowing it down, and there are things you can do to try and prevent it - but there's nothing that just 'causes' it. It comes when, and if, it comes.

Don't entirely agree with you here.......there is research currently being done indicating a possible link between having a concussion history and developing Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia (after all, we don't know Stockton had Alzheimer's, nor would anyone else......today, it can't be confirmed until after death)....there also appears to be a genetic link.

Random thoughts while watching... At least they acknowledged that a debutante ball is hardly the typical soirée Julia would attend and how she might even find it odious. That had been one of my questions... Lol at George giving the lowdown on the "game's players". And William isn't chastising him for the gossip. No, he's listening intently and asking follow up questions. You've come a long way, honey. William tries to act disinterested but quickly reengages Oh, Julia thinks she murdered Eva? Interesting. Oh noes! Did Henry start the fire? Henry! Dead girl was knocked up? Oh snap! Has Julia not been going to work? Oh, young Lady Atherly seems to be there against her will almost... I'm still finding it hard to believe that Lady Atherley and Julia would be friends. If anything, young Lady Atherley would seem a more likely choice. Poor W and J. Still hurting. Dayum. William have you been working out. Seriously, that dude had quite the head start on you...how did you catch him? Henry is officially a douche. And a cockblock. And a bigger douche. Why is he trying to steal George's ladies? Methinks there might be something to the thought that Henry's gay and in love with George. Methinks the Lady Atherly doth protest too much. Also, can someone tell me again why the two of them are friends? Is it just me, or was William particularly feeling the class differences here? Oh, Brax, you still call it like you see it. Bless you, man. William, wake up and smell the scotch. How is it that I want to hug and hit you at the same time. Listen to Brax, man. He does occasionally know of what he speaks. Is it just me, or was Cleopatra at the Star Room a man? Henry certainly seemed to be into him/her... Oh, Brax. Bless you again, man. Always calling it like you see it, even if Julia thinks denial is a river in Egypt. "I must say, I never knew there was so much peril in being rich, young, and white." Oh, it's over. This is the quote of the show right here. I'm liking snarky Rebecca and I'm glad that she's getting some great lines. Oh my, Erma is unhinged. Oh, my. I don't think she's the murderer though, too much of a red herring, IMO. At least Henry has redeemed himself with trying to be a good friend to George "Higgins, do you have to stare?" "Isn't that the point?" Touche, Henry. Aw, jealous George. Can we just let my poor baby find some happiness? Who's the guy always with Rodney? A friend? Butler/servant/valet? Can he be the butler, 'cuz it's always the butler... That's my money, anyway... No Worsely at the desk. It's not the same. Holy shit! Julia's suicidal...wow. I'm not sure that I buy that Julia's crazy, but some form of PTSD, or "haunted" by the whole thing perhaps. Come on, William. It's time for you be a man of action for once...stop being so passive and just letting her do whatever- piss her off if you need to. hi

Yes, to be quite specific there has been a call for the National Football League (American Football) to change the rules, equipment, etc because there seems to have been a rash of high profile deaths/suicides showing symptoms of Alzheimers in rates far greater than the general population. More and more, researchers have found a link between TBI and Alzheimers. Most recently, Will Smith did the movie "Concussion" about the very topic, and on their website, Alzheimer's Association has stated that "Over the past 30 years, research has linked moderate and severe traumatic brain injury to a greater risk of developing Alzheimer's disease or another type of dementia years after the original head injury." www.alz.org/dementia/traumatic-brain-injury-head-trauma-symptoms.asp

I don't think Henry is a "douche" exactly. I think he's a bit socially inept, but basically good hearted. Remember when he asked Emily Grace to a show just after things ended with George? His reaction to her rebuke spoke volumes IMO regarding his less than graceful social skills. I do however think that, regardless of how things turn out vis a vis the fire investigation, Henry will always feel some level of guilt

When I watched this episode I thought that Julia's battle of conscience was a very good story line. Wondering if her jealousy no matter how unfounded had motivated her. This show has always done a good job of addressing psychological issues that had not yet been diagnosed at that time in history.
