Original air date - 6th March 2008
Det. Murdoch and Dr. Ogden investigate the death of Richard Hartley a member of the men's eight rowing team at the prestigious, and snobbish, King's Rowing Club. Hartley was a newly appointed member of the team, having displaced Horace Briggs, a blue collar working man who was not of the same class as the others. Murdoch learns that Hartley had recently had an argument with his coach, Hamilton Kane. To complicate matters, the Hartley's are a prestigious Toronto family with a great deal of influence. The autopsy reveals that he drowned, but had also been beaten. Using a new-fangled lie-detecting device and analyzing the content of his lungs provides Murdoch with the clues he needs to solve the case.

I watched this re-run last night. Hubby shook his head in amusement when I LMFAO at Murdoch in the lie detector chair. That was too funny. Poor ol' Murdoch's about to give a demonstration and in walks Julia. I laughed even harder when the liquid in the thingie shot up, and then that one constable says, "Are you in love?" Haha. Maybe it's so funny 'cause Murdoch is so proper hehe.

Yeah, that part makes me laugh, too. And then Crabtree says "I don't think anyone noticed that, sir." And William gets agitated to get out of it.

OMFG, yes, that was also too hilarious. Crabtree trying to comfort him when he knows everyone was aware how Murdoch felt, LOL. Too cute.

One of the best scenes ever! xD
I also liked, "Terribly bitter, George." "That's what I thought at first too but it grows on you." "Why on earth would they serve this when we have tea? I don't see this catching on." "Oh, I wouldn't be so sure, sir." *smiles and his hand shakes*
Or the whole "May I have my lung water please?" scene.
Or the ending where Murdoch lies about liking coffee in order to spend time with Julia.
Basically, this is probably my fav ep of season one.

The first time I watched this episode, I laughed and laughed. True love is drinking bitter coffee just to spend time with someone :-)

LOL, I loved that, too! I like coffee, but not really strong stuff like an espresso. I drink a lot more tea. Having some now!

Rewatching Season 1 makes me wish all the more that Julia was still in the morgue or at least working as a doctor in a geeky science setting. There is something really hot about William coming to Julia for his scientific materials/knowledge. That element has been missing from MM ever since Julia left the morgue. I'm super grumpy about the shippy bits that were cut from the American syndication.

Perhaps not historically accurate, but it really makes me wish that the force would bring her on as a profiler-we need more William and Julia geeking out together. It's not foreplay at all.I think that's why I loved Unfinished Business so much last season-it wasn't uber-shippy, yet it just showed them being nerds in love, doing nerdy things. Too freakin' adorable!

Someone on the panel - I think Christina Jennings(!) - said "nerds in love"! Unfinished Business wasn't enough for me because it was still William's invention. I want William coming to Julia because she's a "brilliant pathologist" and she's in the lab cranking out his lung water, slicing up some brains, testing stuff in vials, etc.

But yes, I miss their interaction from earlier seasons as well. Extreme!nerdiness!

It's a shame we'll never have that back but I think we may see more of them working together in the future much in the way they worked together in UB.

Day 8 of an ep til season 9! Wahoo! Fell asleep in my recliner and almost missed posting for the day! This ep has SO many gems. So many. & This episode is what REALLY solidified me shipping Jilliam. I totally was before this episode but this one put it on a nuclear level for me. 1. That lie detector scene at the beginning is so great. When he lies about going to church EVERY Sunday LOL. He was so proud of himself and his invention and then Julia walks in. It was so fun to see him squirm. And Henry! Thank god for Henry! "Is the detective in love?!" Not to mention George and his "I don't think anyone noticed, sir.. You and her and the liquid..." 2. I always thought this murder was too obvious but I never seemed to mind with how great the other scenes are. 3. Oh man everything about the coffee is too great. William thinking it won't catch on, so typical of him. I love when he walks away from this scene and leaves his cup and saucer with George and George's hands are shaking! Then at the end when he pretends to like coffee. 4. Does Julia regularly just walk around with vials full of things she found on dead bodies or did she take it with her to try and spend time with him at the club?! 5. And of course that freaking lung water scene! "May I have my lung water please..." I would have been so frustrated with this if William hadn't of done so well later by pretending to like coffee.
