I'd really hoped it was going to be some mastermind copycat killer, maybe a new nemesis, but honestly I didn't mind Gillies at all this time around. I kind of liked him. Totally predicted him coming back with his face all busted up, though I still find his escape after that kind of injury pretty farfetched. And he was handcuffed when he jumped off the bridge, or am I remembering it wrong? But I had fun! My only complaints are that there were way too many flashback scenes (like, every other scene Gillies has ever been in lmao) and the child actor playing Veronica was really bad. I mean, I don;t have high expectations for child/young teen actors doing bit roles, but they at least shouldn't be so ridiculous I'm actually taken out of the supposed-to-be serious and dramatic scene. The 'child actor' playing Veronica isn't actually an actor, she's Peter Mitchell's daughter and reprised the role of Veronica from Murdoch in Toyland.

Oh, I had no idea, haha. Well, that's pretty cute, and it explains a lot. Still made me laugh though, as a casual viewer who doesn't keep track of these kinds of things

Wow.....just wow.....
Was anyone else expecting Julia to throw the brain against the wall with glee?

I'm sure you are right, but I'm sure the thought crossed her mind....or maybe dissect it, then throw the bits against the wall, while giggling manically.......

I have no words...
EDIT: Okay, now that I've had some time to think about it and rewatch it, I can now post coherently about it...I think.
First of all can I just punch the guy on FB who said that we had to bring Gillies back so that he could kill Roland's father so that W and J could get him back? Please? Just no.
When I realized that Gillies was actually back, and that it wasn't just some guy pretending to be haunted by Gillies, all I could think was "f**k".
That said, I enjoyed this episode. It was probably the best of the season so far, but I'm still annoyed that they brought Gillies back, and I'm not ready to ready to say that it was the best of the series. I'm sorry, but I think Gillies died after Midnight Train to Kingston, so what...was the show lying back in season 7? Are they lying now? Because even though we just watched him hang and Julia cut his brain out, I was half expecting to later discover that he had figured out a way to clone himself, and that wasn't the real Gillies... Then, I see tweets like this...and I wonder if we haven't seen the last of Gillies yet.
But as for now, I enjoyed the episode, and I hope my annoyance at Gillies' return fades and that I grow to love this episode...'cause I want to.
Interesting that Gillies was really doing all of this as he was lovesick over William...as I suspected. Julia has been JG's primary target over the years as the woman W loves as he wanted to be loved by W...and thus, it makes perfect sense that he targeted Roland as he was evidence that W had moved on...something JG has never been able to do.

I have to agree with you re PM's tweet. It's ridiculous they brought him back and it would be even more ridiculous to revive him again. I never did like Gillies and his eps were some of the ones I liked the least. However, I really did enjoy this ep, couldn't help myself, and by the time we knew Gillies was really back it didn't matter. The episode was well crafted, had the right amount of is he/isn't he and the suspense built at just the right pace. Perhaps there were one or two flashbacks more than we needed but they did help to tell the story. All in all, I did suspend disbelief at Gillies surviving, W himself offered the solution to how he did it in KFC and they took that and ran with it. GILLIES HAD BETTER BE DEAD THIS TIME THOUGH!!!!!!!

I half expected Gillies' eyes to pop open as Julia pulled his brain out....interesting that they would reveal his fear of being hung while he was threatening Roland.....
Now the speculation will be around did he kill Roland's father or just manage to kidnap the child.....is Roland really an orphan this time and will he end up back with William and Julia......
(The guy on FB who was going on about they had to kill Roland's father is a jerk.....I've made the mistake of engaging him a couple of times when he has gone off on some weird tangent, and on top of everything, he has the attention span of a gnat...)

It is interesting they brought Roland back but I would be surprised if he's back for good. I actually thought he'd just been kidnapped, it never even crossed my mind his father may have been murdered. I suppose they've all got something else to speculate on now ... sigh. We'll never hear the end of it. I did notice that JG mentioned the building of the house. I wonder if that means W finally decided on a builder. I've been tempted to block that guy for a long time, he drives me nuts but he doesn't post that often. I have blocked several people from the MM fb pages because they post annoying comments all the time ... or their spelling is so atrocious I can barely read what they've written.

Okay, I guess I'm warming to the idea of Gillies' return because I can't help but wonder about the age old question of nature vs. nurture: was he born that way, or was he made?
Yes, perhaps there was something about his brain, but maybe he didn't know what love was, having never experienced it from cold, distant parents. It makes a twisted, convoluted kind of sense that he kept going after Julia because the man he loved was in love with her and not him. Eliminate the competition if you will. Roland was also a natural target because he was further proof that William had moved on, something JG couldn't do because he was obsessed with William.
I hope that this doesn't mean the return of Roland, cute little guy he is. Hopefully he was just kidnapped.

I always thought Gillies was a psychopath, nothing more and he fixated on W first because he beat him then because he was attracted to him. He obviously didn't do his homework to get to know W well though as if he had he'd have realized he never stood a chance with him. I guess that's what obsession does to you though.

I spent the first half of the episode thinking "no, it can't really be Gillies because he died jumping off the bridge. They found his body and the bullet from George's shot....he CAN'T still be alive", but I had no other plausible alternative. Freaked out!! In the end though, I have to give Paul Aitken credit for bringing back JG AGAIN in a way that was plausible, even though I really, really, really didn't want it to be true. The idea of a rudimentary cochlear implant is well within Gillies abilities. I have problems with the mechanics of how he got it into Foley, why he chose Foley and how he got the listening device into the light fixture of the interview room. Suspension of disbelief must prevail but Gillies is so precise and focused that I can wrap my head around it. (Never in a million years could I have imagined myself saying that!)
Gillies has always been the villain I have credited as being William's equal. They are absolute counterpoints to one another intellectually, socially, morally, and psychologically. It's a dance that evolved once Gillies fell in love with Murdoch. It was obvious but it wasn't. It was plausible but it wasn't. Gillies kept coming back for more because he was obsessed with William. He could have gone anywhere to satisfy his lust for killing, moving on as needed, becoming a turn of the century sequential killer, but he needed to dance with William. That is the reason I buy the whole plot of this episode. The fact that he healed from his terrible injuries, then spent such meticulous time observing and learning about the man he loved and figuring out the best way to exploit William's love, the one thing Gillies would never have. It all makes terrible, terrible sense.
I have to assume that Gillies killed Roland's father, leaving him truly an orphan. The door is once again wide open for the baby discussion, or Roland's adoption. We'll see.
I absolutely loved the scene with Julia in the morgue, finally removing Gillies brain, with After the Ball playing on her gramophone. Such a full circle.
Yes, this episode is up there in my top 10 of the series.
