Original air date - 10th April 2008
With the visit of Queen Victoria's grandson, Prince Alfred, to Toronto, Detective Murdoch and Constable Crabtree are put in charge of security. The Prince is a bon vivant who is particularly fond of parties and pretty girls but his aide, David Jennings, is hard-nosed and demanding. When the police find a dead girl in the park, her tattoos reveal that she may have been a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and there may in fact be a plot against the Prince. Murdoch also runs into to an old friend from their days at the seminary who may, or may not, have Republican sympathies as well.

Favourite quote: "Quite right. Detective Murdoch goes out of his way to avoid pleasure."

"Murdoch goes out of his way to avoid pleasure." Still one of the best character-defining lines in the series. Though one wonders if that's still true now that William has a domestic life.

Day 12 of an episode a day til season 9! 1. Like the other two posts in this thread the quote "Detective Murdoch goes out of his way to avoid pleasure" kills me. So true and funny xD I also like when the Inspector tells William to "Look outside and smell the maple leafs!" 2. From the start you know things are gonna go wrong for George. George didn't seem to mind the ladies that met him outside of the Prince's room though, lol 3. It was fun to see Henry learn all the ins of assisting a detective! He seems so annoyed by the process of it all these days! 4. It's such a shame that Eddie ended up being involved in it and dying. Not many of William's relationships from the past ended very well. 5. Of course love the cute bit at the end when Julia is fixing his wounds.

They took a few historical liberties with this episode, but it is still an interesting one. Prince Alfred was actually Queen Victoria's son and would have been considerably older than as portrayed here (in fact he died in 1899). He was the Duke of Edinburgh and became Duke of Saxe, Cobourg and Gotha.
The Fenian Raids took place in the 1860s and 70s and were a contributing factor to Canada's formation. According to family legend, one of my Great Great Grandfathers defended against them as a member of the Canadian Militia.......

Actually Queen Victoria's son, Prince Alfred, had a son named - er - Prince Alfred. He was born in 1874 so would have been an appropriate age and unmarried at the time of the episode. Apparently he suffered from depression and possibly syphilis and eventually died of a gunshot wound from a suicide attempt in 1899. Oh the cheer in reading about the lives of the royal British family!

Yes, you are right........he never toured as a member of the British Royal Family as he would have been German royalty at that point.....he sounds like he was a very troubled young man (as was his father.......) It is also possible he had entered into a secret marriage and between strife with his parents over that and the syphilis, that may have what lead to his suicide......
