Set in 1895 Toronto, Murdoch Mysteries explores the intriguing world of William Murdoch, a handsome young detective using radical forensic techniques including fingerprinting and trace evidence, to solve some of the city's most gruesome murders. Though his unconventional approach elicits ridicule from fellow officers and scepticism from his boss, Inspector Brackenreid, Murdoch is often the only one who can crack the case.
Murdoch’s small circle of confidantes includes pathologist Julia Ogden, a staunch ally who shares the detective’s fascination with forensic science, and Constable George Crabtree, Murdoch’s eager but inexperienced right-hand man. He’s been charmed and conned by Sally Pendrick into accusing her industrialist husband, James Pendrick, of a series of thefts and murders. And there was the heartbreak of Dr. Julia Ogden’s decision to leave Murdoch and Toronto for a new life at The Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, New York. Julia’s decision was based on her belief that her inability to have children would be an insurmountable problem for Murdoch – despite his protests to the contrary.
As Julia’s train departed for Buffalo, Murdoch rushed to the station, engagement ring in hand, only to arrive too late. That simple twist of fate, that just-missed connection would cleave them apart: each mistakenly believing the other had given up on their relationship.
