A Scotland Yard Inspector, Edward Scanlon, tells him that he's been persuing a suspect who he believes to be Jack the Ripper. Soon after there is another victim found, Gloria Abercrombie, who has recently moved to Toronto. Murdoch hopes that he can get a psychological profile of the killer from Dr. Roberts. Using a UV light, a new invention, he discovers where the murders took place. Dr. Ogden accepts Murdoch's invitation to the Dinasour Ball but they have one problem, Murdoch can't dance.

This was perhaps the 3 rd ep of MM I saw, and IIRC, it was the one that hooked me. The Victorian moodiness. The antique game. The creepy Alienist. The female coroner who took care of her own business. Adorkable waltz!phail with an evident OTP. Detectives on bicycles.
What more could I ask? If every episode of MM hit those notes, I'd die a happy woman.
One false note (for me) -I feel the last line about wanting to be held is the sort of maudlin cliche that belongs in bad fanfic. But other people seem to regard it as emotionally revealing.

They were touched on the hand at best. Julia had been through a severe trauma...killing a man in self defence...and she needed to be held in order to process her grief/fear/anger. Yes it was a handy ploy to get William and Julia in close physical proximity but it was emotionally revealing in that she asked for comfort and he did not hesitate to give it.

I totally buy that reasoning and process. It's just the line itself I object, too. If it's such a taboo in the Victorian era, then perhaps Julia would have found a more indirect way of requesting her safety cuddle?

She's estranged from her family and doesn't have many female friends she can turn to. William is the logical and emotional choice. What would you rather she have said or done?

She is already dancing with him. Something like "Closer, please." might work.

I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

But I'm in the minority. I believe her words were the more Victorian version, "I would very much like to be held". Awww. She'd just stabbed a serial killer. She needed a hug. I'd be asking William too! There was also that look of relief on her face once he had stepped closer.

I agree she needed a hug - and I love that she got it. I love the look on William's face when he gave it - that was William's chance to man up, too! This is solely about the wording of the request for me. I've just read far too much fanfic to be able to listen to "I want to be held" with a straight face. It's like someone saying "It felt like coming home" to describe their climax. How about: "I couldn't be alone tonight" ...and William sensing that means to hold her closer?

Fair enough, but I suspect she was too overwrought to risk anything other than the direct approach. Yes, it could have been written differently.

And there was only 3 seconds left of screen time to burn~
