That would definitely have worked! I would have been a lot more happy with anything along those lines. Just a little more indirect than "I want to be held". Both work equally fine-but I think I prefer "I want to be held" because it gives away her subconscious thought that William can help protect her. She's no damsel in distress (she just stabbed a man all by herself), but she does need his emotional support. To me, that was a perfect role-reversal-she was the woman of action, he was the man of comfort. I've always thought it was a sweet scene-William to his credit, mans right up and takes her in his arms even though she's not yet his woman. They all but subconsciously admit their feelings to one another-which they can't seem to do consciously.

I love how close they are at that moment - how those dance lessons enable them to express what they hadn't been able to express for so long. But Julia needing to be explicit about it takes a little away from the moment for me somehow. Now that I put it like that, perhaps that's the first in the long line of Julia-initiated/directed suggestions to William...?

It's direct, but she's also traumatized-and she needs to be explicit to William so that he gives her exactly what she needs. There's no way for William to misinterpret that.

I still don't like the line, but I will give you that it underscores how incredibly dense William is that he would need to be told something like that so directly, leaving no room for obtuseness or misunderstanding.

She is already dancing with him. Something like "Closer, please." might work. He'd think she was being scandalous and would start analyzing. I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I'm with you on this one. I think the line as said was appropriate.

Scanlon's cravat - looks like river of blood. Deliberate?
Scanlon was also the name of one of the X-Files villains. I still wonder on occasion whether there is an X-Files vet hiding in on the MM team.
Random - realized today that the Battle of Wounded Knee took place near the start of MM. Too bad they didn't have an ep that tied in with Indigenous Peoples that way.

I wanted to come back and comment on this episode as it is likely my very favorite episode. This type of story gets done a lot, hell essentially the same episode was done on Sue Thomas F.B.Eye (which was also my favorite episode of that show!), but I always love them. Scanlon being the serial killer certainly was obvious from the start but I found that to make it more exciting as I watched it. I believe this was the first time Julia was in danger and it was terrifying, even though you knew she'd be fine. Then obviously Jilliam was exploding all over this episode. All of it was great, Scanlon being mouthy with Julia and William demanding he apologize to her, the surprise of them ending up in the lessons together, William wanting to ask her something about the case ("I thought you'd never ask..."), and of course the very end with William holding her. I loved every bit of it.
Also, the dance lessons must be part of the books? I haven't had a chance to read the books but they have included this in the TV series & movies.

I believe her words were the more Victorian version, "I would very much like to be held". Awww. She'd just stabbed a serial killer. She needed a hug. I'd be asking William too! There was also that look of relief on her face once he had stepped closer. I agree she needed a hug - and I love that she got it. I love the look on William's face when he gave it - that was William's chance to man up, too! This is solely about the wording of the request for me. I've just read far too much fanfic to be able to listen to "I want to be held" with a straight face. It's like someone saying "It felt like coming home" to describe their climax. How about: "I couldn't be alone tonight" ...and William sensing that means to hold her closer? I'm coming to this discussion very late. If Julia had said "I couldn't be alone tonight" do you honestly believe that William, who can't read the signals, would understand what she meant. I think by now Julia knows William well enough to know that she needs to be more direct with him.

Yes the dance lessons are part of the books. It was a way for William to meet women.

I managed to get off a day on doing an ep a day til season 9 so day I am doing two! I recently posted about this but I'll try pick new things to post! 1. I feel like I don't like this episode nearly as much now that I've been watching the other earlier episodes. I just liked the Jilliam bits so much! 2. We don't get to see William re-use his inventions very often. I wish he would! 3. I quite appreciated when William essentially made Scanlon apologize to Julia. That probably made Scanlon really hate Julia. 4. It would have been fun if Dominique had lines! 5. I like to think William's hand slipped accidentally on purpose.
