Original air date - 10th March 2009
Det. Murdoch investigates when a young woman's body, Lily Dunn, is found in a ditch. It's learned that she was fired from her job the day she died. According to Dr. Ogden the young bled to death and probably hemorrhaged after an abortion. With his relationship with Julia getting more serious Murdoch is feeling a little jealous when he see's Julia leaving Dr. Tash's office, a one-time admirer of Julia's. When he learns the truth about the case he has to re-evaluate his place and possibly his relationship with Julia.

This episode always gets to me. I think it's the ending when they show Lily dying. I also adore the countess. I hope they have her back one day. The way Julia and the countess bonded in the jail cell is one of my fave scenes in this series. Maybe they'll bring the countess back for....this might be a spoiler.........
Now that Julia is going to operate her birth control clinic, I'd love to see the countess play a big part in helping out. That woman was awesome. She was shady, yeah, but she also deeply cared about her girls that she helped.
Part of me was a bit angry at Murdoch's lack of faith in Julia. His trust is really shaky to assume she'd use her position to tip off Doctor Tash. I wish Julia woulda been more spirited towards his accusations. Her passiveness bugged me, but then again, she had a lot on her mind because of her abortion and how to tell William, so I can see why she reacted the way she did. It makes me wonder if Dr. Tash will also return now that Julia will be operating her new clinic. Hard to say, but he's another character I enjoy seeing again.

That's a good point about Dr. Tasch reappearing if Julia continued to run the clinic. That may or may not happen. We'll just have to see. The countess was run out of business by the investigation, I think. But she could always reemerge. She'd had to take on a new persona due to being found out for helping women abort before. It was hard to see William think Julia would go behind his back to Tasch but she sort of had to. If William had known that Tasch was an abortionist, esp. before he knew the details of what women went through and how Tasch helped them, he would have been duty bound to report him. Julia was determined not to let that happen because she felt indebted to Tasch for saving her life. I think the only reason William thought that she was being unethical was that he was blinded by jealousy when he thought Julia still had romantic feelings for Tasch. He thought that was why she was protecting him. Then we find out there had never been romance btwn them in the first place. But William was led to believe there were. Of course, Julia was protecting Tasch because he had protected her when she needed it. So William was somewhat right but he didn't have as much compassion about that until he found out what Tasch had done for Julia.

I'm surprised this one doesn't have much discussion! It's my next ep in an ep a day til season 9 1. I absolutely SO wish this episode could have been one or two later in the season. Right after the TGM high they rip Jilliam out from under us again. & the scene in the beginning when she comes in to his office and just can't help herself. It's so cute. 2. George was killing it as usual. Telling William he'll make sure the lads don't disturb them prompting William to shout so everyone can hear they are having a professional conversation. Then later when George walks in and is looking at the ceiling. 3. I really liked the conversation between Julia and the Countess in the jail cell. 4. I've always felt William handled his accusations towards Julia horribly. I'm not sure if attribute it to jealously towards Dr. Tasch or if it was just his over zealous need to get the truth. 5. I wonder if it would have been beneficial to them later if she had mentioned being sterile at that point. All in all I quite like this episode.

I always thought that William handled it poorly as well, and while I think his über-Catholic beliefs played a role in his fervor to prosecute those involved, I think there was some shock and horror at how Julia might be involved-the woman he was seriously contemplating marrying and having children with himself. However, this is a perfect example of character growth-look at where William was in comparison to where he is now. His love for Julia is important not because of romance, but because it's made him grow as a person, to be less rigid in his beliefs. She's not the only reason for this development, but she is an important part.

I think this episode is one of the lynch pin episodes of the entire series, as it colours the relationship between William and Julia, made both examine their beliefs and hopes for the future, plus it gets referred to in subsequent episodes......it was very well done.....a great example of MM tackling issues with are as relevant today.
I'd love to see Mary Walsh back again....she is thought of as being a comedian, but she got to show her dramatic side....

William's zeal for the truth sets in motion events that will forever change the way they see one another. It sets the tone for the rest of the series as far as the relationship goes. Also it doesn't teach him that his zeal for the truth should sometimes be left alone, he can be a slow learner at times. I actually prefer this ep to TGM. I too would love to see Mary Walsh back.

She's not the only reason for this development, but she is an important part. William's vision in this one is quite gory as well as religiously-underpinned. And in a way it's quite vainglorious - William praying over the salvation of they dying girl is almost the Pieta in reverse. I would have liked to have seen more explorations of William's subconscious like this in later seasons. William's current imagination is not nearly as interesting!
