Original air date - 17th March 2009
Detective Murdoch investigates the murder of a university professor, Samuel Bennett, who was killed with a shot to the head while looking through his telescope at his university residence. Murdoch finds out that Bennett didn't get along with another Professor, Albert Godfrey, and that they frequently argued. Constable Crabtree puts an advertisement in the local newspaper looking for his biological mother. When he was a baby he was left on the steps of a church and was then raised by the Minister and his family. Two women turn up at the station house claiming to be his mother. Murdoch helps to identify his mother when he is shot while working on the case.

This is a superb episode. Enjoyed seeing the actor who played Myles in Sue Thomas F B Eye working with Yannick Bisson again. I especially liked the secondary storyline about Crabtree and his mothers. He is delightful, how pleased he is to meet them, introduces them to Murdoch, is still lovely even when a second one turns up! I do wonder that we have not seen a return of his mother to the story since. Perhaps they did not get on afterall Its also a good physics lesson and a lead into the S3 episode about the hangman and getting the rope and drop the right length.

I agree seeing Ted Atherton (Professor Godfrey) who previously worked on the television series Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye with Yannick was great. I would hope that Yannick would be able to get some other members of Sue Thomas over to play some roles Thanks, Bryan

The episode in which Murdoch meets two very annoying students who end up being guilty of killing a professor for no apparant reason.

This was a good episode with a strong mystery plot. I liked George’s subplot about finding his mother but I wished they had only just introduced it. Finding and getting to know his biological mother, I feel is a big part of him and I thought it should have been developed through many episodes if not seasons. I didn’t really enjoy that part of it because it seemed all wrapped up within 10 minutes.
The Gillies plot could have had a couple more twists in it to set him up properly especially knowing what role he went on to play in future episodes. But in general, it was a good, strong episode.

We need to see more of George's mom! She was cute. I agree that they could have drawn that out a lot more. The writers probably did not know they would be able to use Gillies again, or they could have set him up for his future villainies better. My impression is that for the whole run of this show, they have only been able to anticipate one season at a time. With Gillies they have been able to make his character work in large arcs, which I hope are over. However this may account for many of the inconsistencies and loose ends.

It’s a shame about George’s mum. He found her within half a day it seems (which was too quick, I thought) and he hasn’t so much as said a word about her since then. Even if we didn’t get to see her again, he should have said something at least to let us know how he is getting on with her even if she later died or something. He talked about his aunts and we felt like we knew them long before we got to meet them. That’s why I felt at the time and still do that they should have slowly developed the story. I think you are right about them not knowing at the time how the Gillies story would go. If they bring him back again, it means that William was wrong when he declared that the bullet Emily pulled out of the corpse was a match (and I hate to see William get things so wrong), even though he was so desperate to get rid of Gillies. Can’t say I blame him for that. My main worry is that if Gillies does surface again, he will not miss the mark this time. He has had plenty of opportunities and time for target practice.

I agree with the writers not being able to anticipate in the long term, which makes reconciling the over-all storyline in hindsight increasingly difficult as the show grows older and its history more vast and complex. In regard to Gillies, I have to say they did a pretty poor job with his arc. He was in a position to be William's great adversary, his Moriarty. But he often became a mere parody of a villain. And of course he escaped from the prison carriage one too many times. Then the identification of his body was so anti-climactic, it was pathetic. Serious under-utilization of a super-villain! But I realize that Canadian TV working the way it does, they had to rely on the actor's availability, and they had to keep in mind that whole "one-off viewing" structure they like to preserve for MM. I wish they would try for another Moriarty, though. A do-over, with a more worthy adversary for William. Less crazy, more chilling please! And perhaps make it a woman. Even the Inspector has noted William's Achilles Heel is intelligent, beautiful women. A few loose ends and ambiguities are okay - fan speculation work tends to make up for those in the end.

If you listen to the most recent podcast on TV-Eh with Peter Mitchell, he talks about the difficulty in pacing and character arcs over the seasons. He also talks about trying to balance the mysteries/shippers/gadgets/character stories, and in a good episode they could get three out of the four. In a great episode, they all came together naturally. He also talked about how the show was old to be one-offs any longer, there had been too much character development to keep on that track and was definitely on an arc! www.tv-eh.com/category/podcast/Almost an hour long, but I listened to it on the drive back from Houston today-a nice way to pass the time! I liked how Gillies was anti-climactic! It would have been too cliche for there to have been an epic shoot out; him going out with a whimper but not before he get seriously eff with William's mind was great, IMO.

Glad you have the patience to listen to podcasts! I just don't have the auditory patience. With text you can multitext, but audio just distracts me. Thanks also for summarizing! I'm glad that MM is trying to adhere to the arcs that it has created at this point. I wonder - did Mitchell say which element he would throw under the bus first if it all got too unwieldy? I'm getting that unwieldy vibe, so I'm wondering what will happen if they decide to "get back to basics" - but then have to decide what the basics are.

Whore of Babylon alert - the first time we see Julia after the break up in Shades of Gray, she is wearing a strikingly red full-length coat. With a rather pointy collar and pearl earrings.
The point being in William's (Jungian) subconscious - only the proverbial whore of Babylon would have an abortion for the sake of her career and have no regrets about it.
When Professor Godfrey is reminding William in the end that in the real world nothing is perfect, Julia is wearing a blue dress. But she is also walking out the door...
Hey, I'd like to see Professor Godfrey back as a guest star, too!

Another day of an ep until season 9!
1. Had a giggle at Murdoch correcting Brackenreid's grammar!
2. It was nice to see George consult William on things in his personal life. They are such great yet somewhat unlikely friends.
3. William got over the awkwardness between Julia & him quickly. I loved that he still wanted to go and try sort out his thoughts about the case with her.
4. William is a good actor when it comes to solving a case! He did well pretending George was dying.
5. I'm definitely glad that they used Gillies later on. Brackenreid even made a comment that he was like an iceberg and at the time I'm sure he couldn't have imagined how right he was.
A fun bit: As we all know, Ted Atherton was in Sue Thomas with Yannick, but he was also in An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving with Helene! He played Mr. Hopkins. His wife on the show, Mrs. Hopkins, was played by Paula Boudreau who also appeared in this episode as Emily Richardson! Quite the cross-over going on in just one episode.

Further to the crossover Ted Atherton was also in Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy with YB.

I am kind of surprised William took the initiative to try and make up with her without any hint or push from Julia or anyone else! Usually he has to be prodded into the opportunity. And now that I think of it, poor guy, many of the times when he did take the initiative it didn't go well!
