When Murdoch probes deaths linked to Egyptian antiquities, Crabtree is convinced a curse is to blame.

"Walkin' mummies, Crabtree, you honest? First vampires, then zombies, then beatin' 'earts, now dead bodies walkin' 'round wrapped up in toilet-paper?...Get back to work!"
...And yes, modern toilet-paper as we know today (on a roll), was invented in 1883.

I just finished watching episode 3.
The ending was very enjoyable. I won't say anything more than that 'cause I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't seen the episode yet.
I like this new Dr. Grace character. She's young and intelligent, beautiful and eager to please. The working-in of the curse was very ingenious.

Just saw the episode and I make it short because it's really late here already: - I liked the case- Crabtree and his sudden fame made me laugh - same goes for Brackenreid and his comment about Murdoch and certain types of women - I also like the new doctor - I missed Julia terribly... especially her chemistry with Murdoch. It's just not the same without her.

Hmm, not sure what went wrong with this ep but i found it to be very boring. Maybe it was lack of Julia? The stuff not dealing with the case was good though. I love how George is already planning on writing another book! ;D
One question though for all the history buffs. Did an author have to get signed by a publisher back then or was everything self-published? Or did he just choose to self-publish? George said something about putting money into his printings and so i'm wondering about this.

People would not have been able to self publish nearly as easily as one can today. George meant that his publisher had decided there was enough interest/sales from the first printing of his book to warrant another printing. Sounds like he benefited from the Egyptian mummy craze going on at the time, esp. with the exhibition. I finally got the chance to watch it with being busy moving/looking for work. I have loved Ancient Egypt since I was a kid. This was a fun episode. I did miss Julia but Iris was an interesting character with some similarities to Julia. The Egyptian curse was explored in an interesting way. I am pretty sure the plot was referencing King Tut's Curse which was said to plague those who opened his tomb. A few of the people who discovered it/worked with it died of seemingly mysterious causes. It took quite awhile for Thomas to show up and I missed him until then. I enjoyed George's curse of fame, too!

This was an interesting episode, but I'm not completely sure how much I liked it. I loved the parts involving George and his novel & subsequent fame. I thought Thomas' warning to William about his attraction to beautiful intelligent women was nice, but I felt Thomas wasn't as involved as usual, or perhaps just not in the usual way. I liked Dr Grace better than I had, but I really missed Julia a lot. The analysis of the case that developed in their conversations I found to be a major way of explaining things was a lack that wasn't filled by his conversations with Dr. Grace, perhaps due to a different chemistry perhaps?
I know there are a lot of Murdoch fans who weren't thrilled with a William/Julia romance, but tonight's episode made me feel as if the writers wanted to close off that romance so that William is free to have a romance of the week...I hope that's not the case. I know many TV shows tend to have the lead actor romancing the female guest star from week to week, but that's not Murdoch, so I hope this was a stray thing and not a portent of things to come.

Yeah, I miss the chemistry btwn William and Julia, too. And not even the romantic chemistry (which I do like) but just the professional chemistry. I will look forward to episodes with her in them again. I do wonder if Dr. Grace will have chemistry with George. I don't see it yet.

I have a habit of this. I was refering to the beginning of the episode when George said he had paid for 50 additional copies to be printed and Murdoch was surprised that he would put so much money into it. So it made it seem like he was self-publishing. Anyways, thanks for your answer. I really had no idea what they did back then.

I have just joigned your board recently and is enjoying a lot the discussions that are happening here.
For me this episode was fun because of the case and I also loved the story around George and his interraction with the Inspector.
However, I have to admit that I didn't think I would miss Julia that much. Don't get me wrong, I am a W/J shipper, I love Julia and I am a fan of Helene Joy; I just know that she will come back in a few episodes so I knew she wouldn't be in this one so I figured that I would enjoy the episode just as much but something was missing. Even if we take out the romantic aspect of W/J relationship, I loved the way she was interracting with him on a professional level as well as the way she interacts with George and the Inspector.
So even though I am excited about the new episodes coming I guess I won't be fully satisfied until Julia's back!!

Welcome to the board barbarama! I too miss Julia but I think Dr. Grace has a lot of potential. If only she would learn to knock! I am still stuck on DEATH from SUPERNATURAL! I've met him and he creeps me out even in the flesh!

I too missed Julia. One would think she would have read George's book. It would have been fun to see how she would have reacted to the vampish persona George portrayed her as in his book. On that same topic, I would have also enjoyed some comments from Murdoch and Thomas on the same subject. Did they like how George treated them in the book?
