I missed Juilia obviously, but I also liked Doctor Grace, much better then in the previous episodes. I think she will have a lot to teach Murdoch and Murdoch has a lot to teach her.

Yeah, I miss the chemistry btwn William and Julia, too. And not even the romantic chemistry (which I do like) but just the professional chemistry. I will look forward to episodes with her in them again. I do wonder if Dr. Grace will have chemistry with George. I don't see it yet. I totally agree with this. First there was the hotel owner in the Yukon, then this Egyptologist and who knows next week. The write up for next episode mentions a woman labour activist. Will he be attracted to that woman also? William is starting to look like Captain Kirk of the original Star Trek series who used to romance a new alien bimbo each week!!! I know it is early to pass judgement on Series five, but so far it's one out of three for me. I liked episode two, but I found one and three lacking. While I find nothing really wrong with Dr. Grace, I find that her character was served up to the fans as the token "female character". There is not doubt that Julia was also the token female character originally, it did not feel so forced in her case. From readings posts from other boards, it seems that the fan base of this show is largely female and maybe the producers were hesitant in replacing Julia with a man as we would have ended up with a male only cast? I found Dr. Francis last year was a much better replacement than Dr. Grace is this year. His character was totally different from Julia and it seemed to work better. Hopefully the next few episodes without Julia will be better and I will be proven wrong.

Ifo do hope it doesn't turn into Murdoch's romancing somebody new each week...that would makethe show so much weaker. One of the things I really enjoyed about season 3 was the way the romantic relationship allowed for a chance to comment on the motive behind the murder, almost like a summary of the episode.
I ddon't dislike Dr. Grace, but I don't like her at the expense of Julia...that professioonal chemistry was a critical element of the show.

I too missed Julia. One would think she would have read George's book. It would have been fun to see how she would have reacted to the vampish persona George portrayed her as in his book. On that same topic, I would have also enjoyed some comments from Murdoch and Thomas on the same subject. Did they like how George treated them in the book? This is a good comment - we never did get any sort of "feedback" about how William, Julia, et al felt about their portrayal in George's book! Maybe they didn't recognize themselves! I've only viewed this episode once or twice before: since Julia isn't in it, it's not part of my canon binge-festing. It's a good "Scooby Doo" episode, though. You can see a bit of William the autodidact in this episode and how he is filled with wonder at the prospect of traveling around the world: Julia could be bringing a bit more of that out of him since she has traveled quite a bit. Even though Julia wasn't in this episode, her spirit was there since it was obvious William was attracted to those same qualities in Dr. Bajjali. And William's frustrations with Dr. Grace were based on what he was used to automatically getting from Julia. I always like to see hints of George the Secret Millionaire (under his continued humble self, of course). This episode starts the ball rolling on that backstory. Also this ep had some great outre Dr. Grace moments - MM should have continued her character in this vein!

This was a good episode. I like history lessons in small doses like this. The mystery was good and I was surprised at who it was in the end. George was very much into it with his book and brush with fame. He was very serious about giving William and the Inspector a history lesson on the curse of the Egyptian Mummy. I couldn’t stop laughing watching him in this episode. And I liked the way the Inspector asked for a signed copy for the Mrs just to cheer him up even if he didn’t really want it. And George proceeded to tell him about his next book – on Leprechauns. I loved Emily here and her interactions with William. I was sure I was going to enjoy her character in the show but they’ve been messing her about trying to hook her up with George or some other man. She had such a direct and nonchalant way of communicating with and delivering her findings to William, it irritated him. She was such fun. I knew that William will eventually find a comfortable level with her (once she learned to knock) as he got to know her better. William seemed taken by Dr. Bajjali from the moment he set eyes on her. She was exotic, pretty and intelligent and she had a radiant smile. Can’t say I blame him. He’s a man with good taste afterall. I had fun watching William around her and I wasn’t surprised when the Inspector tried to put the brakes on William . He does know his boy very well. The interview between William and Dr. Bajjali looked painful for both of them, lol. Watching it, I felt this was one of those situations where you lose a few pounds without visiting the gym even if all turns out well in the end, like it did here. I was happy to know that she wasn’t the villain. William would have been so disappointed. I think William should go visit her some day when he is on holiday from work, and take that expedition trip to the mountains to discover something new. I think he will love it. Dr. Bajjali is like a female version of James Pendrick to William. He has other things to talk about besides work and he gets really excited about it. I like to see him having fun like that every now and again.

Another ep a day!
1. I bet there were people at the time of the episode airing that thought Julia had been written out!
2. I love how George not only accidentally invents things but he also is up on all the new cool hip lingo.
3. William was quite sassy when he told Emily "Whatever it is you missed the first time!"
4. The Inspector was certainly right about William and attractive intelligent women! As soon as Doctor Bajjali mentioned being a doctor he perked right up.
5. I'm not a huge fan of this episode. It's kind of a novelty episode so they could do stuff with mummies and curses. We didn't gain much from it. I wanted to take more out of this episode with Julia recently quitting.

I wanted to take more out of this episode with Julia recently quitting. I'm kind of surprised they didn't bring back Dr. Bajjali when she could really do some damage - when William and Julia were still dating. William had obviously been very attracted to Dr. Bajjali: she was real competition for Julia. I was bummed she died at the end of the Temple of Death.

Maybe Julia is a criminal mastermind and is getting rid of any rivals. Anna had to leave town. Did Julia tip off the black hand so that Anna had to leave. Did Julia see William and Dr Bajali together so she had to go. We have never seen or heard of Enid again. What happened to her? Sally Pendrick, her body was never found and it was assumed she got away. What if she didn't. Bit of a pattern, any woman who is a rival for Julia is either dead or has disappeared.

Perhaps something extra was added to the "Grail" cup to attract the lightning! This would make a great epic fic (novel length, even).

This is excellent. You might be on to something! Now let's see what happens to Eva Pearce... maybe Julia has already taken care of her she'll never turn up in another episode.
