S5 Web Series: The Murdoch Effect

That's a bummer that they did half as many as last year. But these were all live action so with Helene Joy not being available very much, I guess it makes sense.

I think the webserie was filmed within a day or 2 (maybe 1 more but not sure) just after they finished filming season 5 so I don't think it has anything to do with Helene Joy not being available for filming anymore.

The episodes are more than 4 min each and if I remember correctly in Cotlp they were around 2 min sometimes more sometimes less so even if this one is shorter in length it is not too far from the 1st webserie. Also I think the idea for a webserie came from CityTv and I am not sure there will be one done with CBC (cross fingers though they are so much fun) so maybe with City canceling the show on their network they didn't want to put too much into it.

It is just an idea though I haven't seen the episode 6, been looking on tumblr pages but it hasn't been posted yet, I can't wait to see it and talk a bit more about it!!!

Yeah, they couldn't have filmed 13 episodes in one or two days though. That's my point. She wasn't available as much so that may have contributed to doing fewer of them. She wouldn't have had to be in all of them, I guess. But I think part of the reason they did them was to have some William and Julia time while they were separated in S5. I'm sure there were other reasons for it, too. Like you say, City TV may not have wanted to do as many this year since they're not keeping the show. I think it's better that they are longer, too. 2 mins was way too short to get into it.

LOL at Murdoch's very victorian take on the famous Dirty Harry line. I guess the webseries fits around the finale time but before they are reunited. Because they are close again but not back together yet. Or possibly it could be after 508 and before 511, when they had become friendlier. It's defo not earlier than that. So that's where I'd say it fits. But for Canadian viewers it's going to confuse the events of S5 lol

Thank you murdochic and Scrubby for letting us know just finished watching it. That was cool and I liked the song at the end. As for Canadian viewers maybe because tonight they will see episode 2 and we all know what is happening there the webserie is there to let them know that it will be alright at the end between them. It was a strange time to show it for Canadian viewers though. It just doesn't fit into S5 at the point they are. It's very spoilerish. They probably shouldn't have shown it for another six weeks or more.

I wonder if S6 will have a webseries. I suppose the UK half of the shows financers will want one as they were responsible for there being a S6. But CBS may not want to contribute to a 3rd webseries as it might be costing them a lot to make S6 already.

Ha, that was a funny ending. Thomas and Dr. Grace in love! I also loved the Victorian Clint Eastwood line. CBS=an American station CBC=the Canadian station that is taking on MM. CBC is a lot bigger than City TV so they would have the funding to continue the web series if they wanted to. Actually I think the web series are just done by Shaftesbury independent of the broadcasters. So it will depend on if Shaftesbury wants to continue doing them.

ah good to know Hannikan, I think the web series are really funny and inventive and that would be great if Shaftesbury decides to continue with it.

I had to rewatch the episode again because it is very well done and so sweet at the end it gives people hope.

Anyway one line really cracked me up by our dear georges : "..and I got aunt daisy back!!!" hilarious ;D

I don't believe the phone was real at the end, I believe it was an halucination caused by him still having concussion from all the bangs to the head. MM does not do science fiction so it wasn't real, anymore than William's visions in the time machine were. It was just another way to show the viewers that Julia is literally William's future in everyway. Which is the point made in the finale as well.

I have decided that where it fits into S5 has to be just after Murdoch in Toyland, but before Julia began her psychiatry treatment/training as William didn't know. But when 511 ended they has become close again, enough so that she would invite him to a play when they weren't reunited yet. It makes the most sense. And the outfit she wears in the final webisode looks like the one she wears at the beginning of Murdoch in Toyland, so it's something she owns at that time.

I do not think that MM is funded half and half between Alibi and CityTV. If you look closely at the credits, it does not say that MM is co-produced with Alibi, just that it is produced in association with the UK broadcaster. I am not trying to be rude to UK fans here. I am just saying that the large part of the funding does come from Canadian sources. That is why it got cancelled last year when CityTV decided to stop buying the show. MM received 3 1/2 million dollars just from the CFM fund last year. Do a Murdoch Mysteries search in the following link.

CMF is just one Canadian funding source the show accesses. If you look closely at the end credits, there are several more. It would be probably nearly impossible for a show to access this public funding without a Canadian broadcaster. Most canadian shows rely heavily on this public funding. So no Canadian broadcaster willing to buy the show also means no more Canadian public funding.

It doesn't change the fact it was the UK partners who are responsible for there being a S6 and a continuation of the show. They are the ones who told Shaftesbury that they were interested in a S6, so the producers offered it to CBC and it was picked up. They do have a big stake in it, that is why they get such a big mention in the credits. It may not be 50% but it's big enough that they have influence on the producers and the shows future, and that they get to screen the series first in the UK.
