Do you think Julia's change of profession had something to do with Helene's extreme dislike of the autopsy scenes? I know at one point she was thinking of quitting the show (but I don't remember what over but possibly this) and then her character suddenly professed a desire to treat living people instead and now she's become a psychologist so she'll never have to examine another dead body again. I wonder if the producers wanted to keep her so bad that they altered her character's career choice? I don't blame them if they did though.

Where was it based that she wanted to quit the show? I have never seen any real information about it, except maybe some people starting rumors. As long as someone doesn't bring me something (interview, article) anything really that she wanted to quit the show, sorry but I won't believe it. As for Helene being uncomfortable regarding the autopsy scenes with the fake blood and organs, yes she mentioned that in earlier seasons; however I don't think she would be able to stand 4 seasons like this if it was too hard for her to do it. In my opinion I think the writers started to hint something about Julia changing career in season 3 (especially after the H.G Wells episode as well as "Hangman"), she said things like "questioning her calling" or that "she wasn't healing anybody" that's why for me it comes as no surprise that the character doesn't want to work at the morgue anymore, she wanted to help the livings.

Okay, yeah, I can't actually find an article. I just thought this was the case. Apparently I have a bad memory. Wait, I already knew that, didn't I?
Well, that's what I mean. Her character professed this desire to heal the living near the end of the third season. Helene would have already mentioned how she didn't like the autopsy scenes by then. And so I feel like her character was always supposed to stay the pathologist but then they gradually started to change it for her benefit. I don't really care, it's just curious.

You don't have bad memory I'm sure. It's just, I've never seen anything factual about it but I saw some people posting here and there that she wanted to leave the show at some point few years back; so I got curious and asked how they got that information and most of the time people said things like "I don't know, I think I saw it somewhere"; that is why for me it is just a bunch a rumors until I see proof of it (actually I'm not that interested because right now it appears that she's here to stay so I'm happy about this)
As for your theory that's interesting indeed, however I wonder why she would say at some point in the show "that's it I can't stand the autopsy scenes anymore because it makes me sick" when she was hired to be the coroner. I guess we'll never really know why the professional direction for Julia changed but I do love her new role as a psychologist

No, I do have a bad memory...for anything important. But I remember all the useless crap perfectly. Well, maybe she didn't know she had a problem with fake bodies and stuff until after she agreed to do the role. Or here's another idea: I think back then she was having trouble finding work so she just took whatever she could get and she just assumed she'd be able to deal with it. And she was but she had a lot of issues. She had to take frequent breaks cuz she got naseous all the time. And she couldn't easily back out once she had signed because of her contract so she had to stick it out. But the writers/producers felt bad for her and decided to help her out.

I'm pretty sure she mentioned that she was squeamish about the gory stuff at the very beginning. She said she'd gotten used to it in interviews I've seen. I doubt it would be that unless it suddenly started to bother her again. I never have read that she wanted to leave the show. She had another project during S5 that caused her to be available for MM filming less than she usually has been.

I doubt also that it has anything to do with Helene being squeamish with the autopsy scenes. I guess we'll never really know what was the idea behind Julia changing field but I like her new role as the psychologist and I agree that we should see her more though. Maybe in the next episode

I have to admit I didn't like Julia's shift to psychiatry. I do think psychiatry should have a prominent role in the show, and I thought Dr. Roberts was perfect for that part. Psychiatry and psychiatric treatments were going through many fascinating changes at that time.
The only thing I like about Julia's change of profession is she got a trip to Vienna out of it (wish that would have come up more during the show), and the scene where she hypnotizes William into discussing his sexual fantasies was hilarious. Other attempts to utilize her new profession, such as helping William come to terms with the erratic behavior of butterflies, just fall flat for me.
I thought Julia's best profession (after coroner, of course) was her effort to run a women's clinic. I like the politicized Julia, advocating for women's rights as human beings by way of addressing their health issues. Like Emily, I was disappointed when Julia caved to Darcy's wishes to reign her in. After she left Darcy, she should have been joining the first march to give women the vote! She should have gone back to challenging the laws against discussing contraception. She could have been performing abortions herself and fending off the public criticism or even assassination attempts. Instead of William endangering her, she could be endangering William. Her life as a medical doctor is a lot more interesting than her life as a psychiatrist.
Besides, she can barely sort out her own psychiatric issues...!
