It's been a crazy week, so I just finally got to see it. It was a fun episode in terms of the suspense and the location. It reminded me a little of the episode in S1 at the Center for the Brain with the young woman with epilepsy who was killed in the fire. It had the clairvoyant in it, too. Bad Medicine, was the name of it. There were a lot of similarities btwn that one and this, with Emily filling the role of Sarah Pensal in this one. There was also a little of Curse at Beaton Manor thrown in. Anyway, I agree that the use of radium in the episode was creative. I think that this season William is not as involved in the cases (perhaps because he's distracted in thinking about his ordeal with Julia?) or as knowledgeable about the stuff pertaining to the cases. I guess it is more realistic that he wouldn't always know about the substances, but it actually makes the narrative fall a little flat. Plus there was very little humor in this one. William hardly smiled at all (again because he was preoccupied thinking of Julia?) and actually neither did George. It was a grumpy Murdoch episode. Julia was not in this one in terms of the case really at all. I am a little concerned about Darcy actually. I do think he's trying to win Julia back. I hope she isn't having second thoughts after having a good time with Darcy and seeing that he still has feelings for her. I think she has thought that after all she has put him through (from his perspective) regarding contraception and now the divorce, that he didn't anymore. She seemed to be a bit surprised by his genuine happiness to be with her. She was very affectionate with William afterward, of course. By the end of the season, I think there will be no doubt of William and Julia staying together, but I'm sure there are still many ups and downs to come for them. I was surprised that the "affair" at the hotel still hasn't seemed to come out. By now, one would think it would have. I guess when it finally does, all hell will really break loose. Overall this episode was okay, but not quite as good as I hoped, I guess.

Julia isn't even considering Darcy in a romantic light anymore. She's fond of him still and no doubt feels guilty but she isn't tempted by him. William is the only one she wants, she acts like his wife already.

^^That may be true but I had the impression that he would have kissed her in the carriage. So to me, he might very well try something in the episodes to come. She'll of course reject him if he does but I still don't want to see them kiss or something. It's bad enough that that ho bag is gonna be kissing William. >.< hannikan: Thank you! So I'm not the only one really annoyed that NOTHING has happened with their whole 'scandal' thing! It's hard to say how much time has passed since au naturel but it must be several weeks to months by this point and it's simply impossible to me that it hasn't come to light yet! And if it happened off screen, that's just plain stupid!

No problem. I'll stick to the spoiler board for the most part I also didn't mean to put that frown face on, it was an emoji but I guess on these boards it doesn't work.

At worst he'd try and kiss her and be rebuffed. I don't see him as any kind of threat. I don't see anyone as any kind of threat to W/J. Their relationship is rock solid.

I'm not worried that she will get back together with Darcy, only that he will try and that that will cause problems. I know she loves William and is committed to him, that's not really the issue. The only thing that's possible is that since Darcy wants to wait to file for divorce until after he's clocked a year as head of the hospital, maybe they decided to wait to let the "affair" be revealed? But they still went to the hotel together, we saw that. And they weren't trying to hide their spending the night in a room together. I don't know. Hopefully, it will make sense as time goes on.

This was certainly a very interesting episode. I liked it a lot. Spooky and fascinating. It has a wiff of "Downstairs, Upstairs", though. I love writing-history. Anything to do with the history of writing and communications. And I had a total nerdgasm when I saw all the pretty typewriters in this episode. For anyone as pathetically in love with these machines as I am, the typewriters in this episode were the Underwood Standard... The Underwood Typewriter Co. was one of the most popular typewriter-manufacturers in the WORLD. Starting in the 1880s, they manufactured the Underwood Standard typewriters, starting with the No. 1., 2., 3., 4., 5., (their most famous model), and lastly, the No. 6. The No. 5 was considered one of the best typewriters ever made (and as such, is highly collectable). At the time of M.M., however, the No. 5 would've been very new (it came out in 1900). The secretaries and typists at Queen's Park would've been using the older Model 3 and 4 Underwoods. A No. 3 Underwood is shown above. And the Remington Model 10: I'm pretty sure I saw a Remington No. 10. in this episode. Anachronistic; the No. 10 didn't come out until 1908! It was Remington's first visible-type machine. Remington was an innovator in some ways, but in others, way behind the times; Underwood had broken into the visible-type market over a decade before, and was having booming sales. Other M.M. typewriters include Murdoch's Oliver No. 1 (or No. 2) typewriter...Oliver typewriters are famous for their unique downstrike "towers" or "bat-ears". Olivers began large-scale production of typewriters ca. 1894. So Murdoch's machine would've been brand-new when he bought it. Murdoch's Oliver may be seen in the episode "Let Us Ask the Maiden", where he tries to type a letter to Mrs. Jones. And the Underwood seen in "Murdoch and the Cloud of Doom". A few other things... Mr. Briggs the night watchman carries around a bullseye lamp when he makes his rounds... Bullseye lamps were common issue among policemen back in the day. They got their nickname because of the thick glass lenses or "eyes" at the front of the lamps, that helped to magnify, and therefore increase the intensity of light at night.

Just rewatched this episode with eclair and had some new thoughts about it -
Does the occurrence of a Bird Sanctuary fit into the overall "bird watchers are bad mojo" theme in MM?
Since there is discussion of a Woman's Insane Asylum, that brought to mind Eva Pearce. Since she has remained alive, and she's obviously very intelligent, I wonder if she's being set up to be that "female moriarty" I'm always hankering after. I suppose she could fit that role since she's very good at manipulating William. But if she's escaped the noose once, she could fall into the Gillies pattern that annoyed the audience so much: going to jail only to escape again, and again, and again...
I'd forgotten how well this episode interrogated William on his hypocrisy over spirituality.
Also - George is pretty smooth at getting date here (and so is Emily). It's pretty funny to compare William's sisyphean struggle with Victorian morality with George's talent for gettin' some...probably that night.

Yay another episode!
1. I love ghost episodes and things of the like, so I've always enjoyed this one! It always helps that George running his imagination wild.
2. At least with the afterlife stuff George & Emily have one thing in common that they can talk about. I have never understood those two being together.
3. I wish Henry was in this episode!
4. I was glad they brought up William's heaven experience and challenged his opinions on ghosts with that in mind.
5. That is funny that they seem to have a theme going about bird watchers. I had never noticed!

OOHHH Darcy's Back!! That would definatly make this episode worth the two week wait! Wouldn't that open the door for James Gillies as well? Someone better check on whether William has been rustling about in the absinthe supply...
