I was just wondering if any of you have heard of this show. We are just about to get the second season here in Australia. It is based on the books by Kerry Greenwood. Phryne Fisher is a 1920's socialite and detective. I often wonder what William Murdoch would make of her and her flapper ways. Even if you can't access the tv show, I highly recommend the many books; they are so much fun. Here's a little taste. m.youtube.com/results?gl=AU&client=mv-google&hl=en-GB&q=Phryne+fisher&submit=Search

I am a big fan of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. I live in the city where it's set, and filmed. Melbourne, Australia. A lot of the sets and shooting-locations are local landmarks. Here's a few you might recognise, if you've watched the show... This is Victoria Dock, in the Port of Melbourne, just outside the city center. In the first episode, Miss Fisher's ocean-liner docks here. This is the Hotel Windsor (photographed there in 1883) in central Melbourne, where she stays when she first gets home. Spencer Street Station (in S01, E02) no-longer exists...at least, not by that name. It's called "Southern Cross" now (horrible name. I still call it Spencer Street, out of habit). The building has been heavily modernised. It looks nothing like what you see in the TV series. Melbourne has one of the oldest streetcar systems in the world. In the 1920s when this series is set, the W-class tram ruled supreme: When I was a kid, you still had loads of these rumbling through the streets (and they make a hell of a racket. You can hear them coming three blocks down the street). Sadly they're almost nonexistent anymore, except as tourist attractions. The theater featured in episode 6 of Season 1, is probably Her Majesty's Theater: It's the closest one to Chinatown, which also features heavily in the same episode. I've lived in Melbourne over 20 years. If there's anything about the city that you want to know, in connection with the Miss Fisher series, I probably know it.

Hey Shangas,
I'm a Melbournite too!
Lived here all my life.
The Phryne mysteries are to Melbourne what the Murdoch books are to Toronto I guess. Lucky for us that Kerry Greenwood has written a stack more in her series. As I have said before, anyone who enjoys the Murdoch Mysteries will surely enjoy the Phryne Fisher books. They are more like the TV version of Murdoch in that they are lots of fun as well as being good mysteries. However their is no sexual tension as Phryne is a very modern Flapper and gets it on with seemingly every good looking bloke that crosses her path. Oh dear that makes her sound dreadful, but she's not. And if you are into fashion, Kerry does great detailed descriptions of her amazing 20's wardrobe. Unlike Murdoch she doesn't ride a bike (though I wouldn't put it past her), but loves driving her Hispano Suiza, a little too much. Also, were did you live before Melbourne Shangas? I used to live in the inner west and recognise many of the Williamstown locations and love seeing South Melbourne, Albert Park and North Melbourne used too. I have a sneaking suspicion I drove past a location shoot during the summer, but since they were using the interior of an empty pub in Willy, I am not 100% sure. Guess I will just have to wait and see.
BTW.. have to agree with you about Southern Cross, though I love the station, I HATE the name. I still mentally call it Spencer street. What is it with Melbourne officials always changing names of longstanding institutions. And what happened to the stunning transport mural is criminal. Rant over.
AND.. did you know that the Windsor is the oldest hotel of it's standing in the world.

I was born in Sydney. I moved to Melbourne when I was three. I've lived here ever since.
I think it's ridiculous that they changed Spencer Street Station. Just like how they won't bother to restore Flinders Street Station. One day, that entire building is going to cave in, and the government is just gonna go: "Oh...um...uh...woops!"

I love Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Like all of my favourite shows it took me a while to get into it but now I can't wait to see the third series of this wonderful show. In three of my favourite shows the two main characters have been in and out of love and finally two sets of them married (that's Murdoch and Ogden and Castle and Beckett) so I am waiting to see what happens to Miss Fisher and Inspector Robinson in Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Although they will not marry straight away if ever, I think (and I hope) something romantic will happen.

I also love Castle and I have the opportunity to meet Castle himself Nathan Fillion on 19 June at Supernova which is Australia's version of Comic-Con. Cannot wait!

I just watched Season 3 on DVD (which is how I get my TV, if I can't stream it online). Good stuff! Hugh and Dot (the B-couple) have their own interfaith difficulties, much like William and Julia.

I adored seasons 1and 2, but didn't really care for three so much. Too much of Phryne's father (whom I did not care for really), and not nearly enough Mac. In fact, I would watch a spinoff about Mac-underutilizing her character is downright criminal.

I've just seen four episodes of MFMM tonight, they were good. I did however feel I was watching MM at times.

I've just seen four episodes of MFMM tonight, they were good. I did however feel I was watching MM at times. There are a lot of similarities between the two. My husband said it felt like a cross between Miss Marple and Murdoch Mysteries. I have to admit, he's right. I like both shows so I guess there's no reason I wouldn't like MFMM.

I absolutely love MFMM as well! I have a thing for well made vintage shows, it seems
