Hi all! I became a fan of MM about a month ago. I stumbled across it while watching another show on Netflix - Rosemary and Thyme, a British Murder Mystery show. I'm a fan of such genre. MM was a suggested show and I gave it a go after reading the description and was instantly hooked. I think I watched 3 episodes in my first shot and have been catching one here or there when I can. I am really impressed with that show! I absolutely loath shows the likes of CSI - they are chock full of scientific inaccuracies! I should know, I am a scientist, a chemist, specifically a mass spectrometrist. I operate a mass spectrometer. It's a machine that detects chemical fingerprints and is used quite often in forensics. I have enjoyed the show so far and like being able to try to guess the murderer by the end. My favorite (and funniest) so far is "Anything You Can Do". The episode that introduced Jasper Linney who ends up being his half-brother. Jasper's character reminded me of another favorite show of mine that featured a Canadian Mountie - Due South! Does anyone remember that show? The characters of Jasper Linney and Benton Fraser are so similar! Love it! I've also noticed actors from other shows I have watched in the past like Nero Wolfe and the Good Witch Series on the Hallmark channel in the USA.
I do find myself cringing when I see them do things without gloves or safety glasses. But, those items really didn't exist in that capacity back then. But, it's a truly enjoyable show and I wish the folks in the US could view the current season 7 - but, I will have to wait until either Netflix or Amazon Prime start carrying them!

Hi all! I became a fan of MM about a month ago. I wish the folks in the US could view the current season 7 - but, I will have to wait until either Netflix or Amazon Prime start carrying them! I'm so glad you discovered Murdoch Mysteries, even though the show is so well-hidden in the US. It's massively unfair that we don't have legal access to season 7 yet. I hope you will help me raise awareness of MM so it will get better distribution here. Even Britain lags behind Canada by a few episodes. This reminds me of Stargate: if I remember correctly, Britain was ahead a couple of episodes for Stargate. After the British episode aired, everyone flocked to illegal downloads (then called "squinties" - they were tiny to accommodate smaller bandwidths) so they could participate in online discussion at the same time - even though they were planning on watching the show on TV legally just a couple of days later. TV distribution needs to catch up with the realities of global Internet culture. We all know these audience "work-arounds" are bad for the "content creators/owners": but if the audience didn't seek ways to discuss the show at the same time, would shows be able to build enough of an audience to gain International distribution deals? The system itself needs to be addressed. By the way you have me thinking on my favorite episode. I think of watched The Murdoch Identity more than any other. I like the fact William would become an action hero if he weren't constrained by social/professional circumstances. I think of that as William with "his hat off". (He gets more romantically adventurous when the hat is off, too).

Yes I do remember Due South! Lots of dry humour: so Canadian. And a stuffed dog named Diefenbaker. As for the character Jasper: I wish he would return to the show, even just once . He and William actually worked very well together. That ep. was great. It it is cool that you are a scientist and you like this show. I have very little science but I like when William explains what he is doing . I never understood things like the light that can detect blood spatter before, or the science behind night vision glasses.

I never saw Due South, but I think the Mounties give MM some color - they are a bit of an exotic tourist attraction for Americans. We tend to assume they are righteous Dudley Do-Rights, whereas our own cops are probably corrupt. I also like the science explanations in MM: the bit of education (history as well as science) sort of justifies the couch potato hour, even if the science lesson is buried in a heaping spoonful of sugar.

"Welcome ! Yes I do remember Due South! Lots of dry humour: so Canadian. And a stuffed dog named Diefenbaker."
That's right, eus! Diefenbaker was Fraser's deaf, lip reading wolf. He was portrayed by several Huskies on the show. In the pilot it was Newman, then Lincoln and Draco. They did use a "stuffed" Diefenbaker occasionally for some of the extreme stunts. I believe the dogs were trained and owned by the show creator, Paul Haggis. I loved that show so much, I named one of my cats after Diefenbaker!
I do like my career as a scientist and I used to volunteer for a program held every year at a local university (North Carolina State) called "Expanding Your Horizons". It's a half-day workshop for 7th and 8th grade girls held by women scientists, engineers and mathematicians. We hold little workshops with hand-on activities to encourage these young girls to pursue careers in the STEM fields - the world does not have enough women working in the STEM fields.
Dr. Julia Ogden's character is another reason why I like MM. She is a strong and intelligent woman that can hold her own - as best as she can given the time period. It seems like most of the women characters are the strong type - even Mrs. Brackenreid doesn't put up with Inspector Brakenreid's mess!
Snacky, I do wish MM had more exposure here in the US, but sadly, it is my belief that the big networks won't pick it up because it's not violent, gory, sexual or stupid enough to fit their "target" audience. I don't watch much network TV, mainly shows off of Science, Discovery, Animal Planet, History, etc.. Nothing they show interests me in any way.
Thanks for the welcomes!

If we had more shows like MM, perhaps the "target" audience would grow up a little. Right now the demographic and the lowest-common-denominator entertainment are reinforcing each other.

Hey Snacky,
I just wanted to let you know that I am trying to get the word out about MM among my co-workers. They, too, are scientists.

Hey Snacky, I just wanted to let you know that I am trying to get the word out about MM among my co-workers. They, too, are scientists. Yaaaay! I'm so worried that the whole series will end before there even begins to be a fandom to support it in the US. T_T Now we need some reviews in entertainment magazines. Or a celebrity has to delay an airplane flight while he's catching the end of an MM episode. (with bonus "selfie")
