It is a beautiful, finely made floral silk robe, traditionally worn in Japan, that William has permanently preempted from Julia's closet. He especially likes to wear it after his bath.

Dude, that is totally a male kimono, made for men, modeled by a man in a Japanese catalog. I'm not saying it's what William would be encouraged to wear for an interview with the Japanese Emperor, though. Maybe it was hanging in the closet at their (honeymoon) inn?

Talk about cultural differences! There isn't a heterosexual male on this continent who would even think of wearing that UNLESS it came out of a female's closet let alone order it from a catalogue for himself.

Which is why it would be PRICELESS if William made that sacrifice is the name of all-important Anglo-Japanese diplomatic relations. Things are gearing up toward WWI, and these relations need to be cultivated. But the hat stays on.
