1) Where will the honeymoon be? Julia is well-traveled - it will take a lot to impress her. William hasn't seen much of the world: where would he want to go?
2) First Night Married - wildly happy or serious?
3) Whose life gets endangered first in the course of the trip?
4) What historical character will they meet?

No one is taking me up on this. I still favor the "Orient Express" just because of the classic mystery references, and because they could visit the first criminal forensics university program in Switzerland. Anyway...I found an article that discusses what William and Julia have been missing out on all these years: www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2014/06/why-we-sleep-together/371477/Hopefully neither of them snore!

I've been researching a bit. It occurs to me that since Julia is so well traveled she would be willing to let William have more input. I looked up World Fairs for 1903. The one most likely to interest Wm would be the National Industrial Fair in Osaka, Japan in terms of it's wide range of exhibits and activities, however, that would be a 3 month trip at least...too long for a mere detective to leave work. There is another World's Fair in Cork, Ireland that year. So I'm thinking take the train to NYC for a few days. Hop a steamer for Paris. That is a week of quality alone time, hehehe. The City of Lights has myriad delights to entrance and entertain. Next they could cross the English Channel, and take a train to Cork for the Expo, back to London for a few days of sightseeing and back home by ship via Montreal. That would take a good 6 weeks.
I also like the Orient Express but I keep coming back to how much time William will realistically be able to take off. A wedding trip for the well-heeled could easily run 3-4 months or more.

I finally realized what my problem is with the exotic train ride. The title of the episode would have to be...wait for it...drum roll..."Murdoch on the Orient Express". Too cliche. Our MM is anything but cliche. XD

Oooh, Japan would be a great choice because of the importance of the Anglo-Japanese treaty in 1902. The Japanese were perceived differently than the Chinese at that time because they were seen to be "Westernizing" (that came back to bite the West when Japan absorbed Darwinianism, Colonialism, Western Military Strategy, began to need Western-sized oil supplies for their industrial revolution...hence Japan's expansionism and eventual alliance with the Axis powers in WWII). But Japan at the time was a fascinating place. It was the Japan of anime samurai and ninjas. As much as I hate to admit it, the Tom Cruise movie "The Last Samurai" gives a good taste of Japan's turn to the West. Under the Shogunate, Japan had tried to shut out Western culture all together, including literature and science: so when the West was opened up to Japan, *we* were exotic. There was great demand for Western fashions, training in Western manners and social practices like ball room dancing (much like we have "tea ceremony enthusiasts here), and of course the State sponsored education in science, technology, industry, and "modernization". Westerners also discussed Japan enthusiastically, and adventurous ones found work teaching there. (For instance, Lafcadio Hearn). Anyway I like this idea just because it's an opportunity for MM to do "Victorian Japan". But I think William would have to have a reason to go there besides the honeymoon. Perhaps he should be invited as part of the delegation to the Osaka fair to present some police forensic techniques? Ooooh, he could get that massage we were talking about, lol. XD

I read a bit out the kinds of exhibits in Osaka. Both William and Julia would be fascinated. I also suspect that Julia hasn't traveled that far.
I like the idea of a working honeymoon. Makes an end run around my concerns about Wm's absence from Stationhouse No. 4.

Makes an end run around my concerns about Wm's absence from Stationhouse No. 4. Maybe there's a famous Japanese surgeon working on infertility issues. The honeymoon can be 2 episodes, done like The Murdoch Identity: some scenes in Japan (or wherever the honeymoon is), and some (somehow related) scenes back in Toronto. (The Anglo-Japanese treaty thing?) Also, if the Japanese government were paying for the tickets, William could surprise Julia with a honeymoon neither of them thought he would ever be able to afford!

Some notes on the Japanese National Industrial Exposition. Since Japan wanted to be a contender for holding an International Exposition, they included a building for foreign exhibits. Participants included the United States. The "wow" exhibit was the automobiles. The expo was held at night to show that Japan had entered the electric age. There was a merry-go-round(!) They demo'd inventions like x-rays, telegraph, moving pictures. (Note: in a large venue like this, there may have been some challenges for law enforcement. But it was also a diplomatic challenge since Japan was trying to present itself as a modern International power, and a contender to hold an International Expo.) I can certainly imagine a situation where William, with Julia's encouragement, might submit an article to a respected journal on the topic of forensic science and begin to garner an international reputation. Because of this he might receive an invitation to participate in the Japanese expo, and perhaps, secretly, to help solve some crime that is putting the whole venture at risk! One further note: the Anglo-Japanese Alliance was to curb Russian expansionism: it created some interesting cultural exchanges with Japan, but also set up some of the European conflicts that led to WWI. Anyway, the British Empire - and by extension Canada - would be aggressively courting Japan at this time. The public supported the treaty, and artists were fascinated by Japan. Anyway, all the more reason to be sending informal "diplomats" to help with Japan's modernization. If you're wondering why the British are so worried about the Russians, it's because India is a major part of their "Empire", the "Great Game" is being played in the Middle East and western Asia, and the Russians are expanding south. It's all about holding on to that Empire. Then when Japan reads Western books and wants an Empire, too, we will say "but Empire-building is wrong! Gotcha!" lol.

It really has a lot to offer in terms of plausible reasons to go. The only downside is the travel time! What do you think writers?

It really has a lot to offer in terms of plausible reasons to go. The only downside is the travel time! What do you think writers? The other downside is production costs. Japan is a prohibitively expensive place to go, and I imagine it would be hard to find historically authentic spots for filming. And then a plane might fly through the scene. It might actually be easier to build a model Japan set: just like that really obvious model they use sometimes for Toronto. If most of the action takes place indoors (Expo hall, a Japanese style inn for the honeymoon, some official looking place to meet with officials: that would probably look European), I suppose this could look plausible. Maybe there's some sort of Japanese movie set they could borrow, too. Also, anime-watching writer-nerds are slobbering over an excuse to write about Japan.

Okay, I don't feel like reading all this snacky, no offense. I don't care where they go as long as they go somewhere! It will be really lame if after all that they get married and then are back at work the next day!
I'm actually currently working on a fic where they have gone to Paris for their honeymoon (and spent the entire week travelling there in their cabin). Cliched I suppose but travel time wise it's more feasible than other places. A month away isn't too impossible for a mere detective, especially with George more than willing to pick up the slack!
Also the cool thing about picking Paris is that there's a certain French Inspector that they can have another run in with! Not to mention giving Yannick ample opportunities to speak more French! Ooh la la.

It's a stop on the Orient Express! I've also been pointing out the possibility of a side visit to the first criminal forensics degree program in Switzerland. If William is invited to speak there, that can help pay for the honeymoon. Mr. Ooh la la better not put the moves on Julia. He can get his mistresses elsewhere!

Well it would definitely be different that's for sure! Murdoch's reaction to seeing Julia in a Kimono would be priceless! But it would be even funnier if he had to wear one too out of respect to the host nation!

But it would be even funnier if he had to wear one too out of respect to the host nation! I think even a European-style wedding dress could be styled on a kimono because the "Japanese fever" had such a heavy influence on arts and culture on the time. A lot of what we regard as "modern" could be said to be inspired by the flatness and shapes of the Japanese graphic arts style. But OMG William having to wear a kimono - YES!!!! And trying to go through all his awkward European cultural protocols while wearing it. Dang, it would be worth the cheesy model that would probably have to stand in for "Japan" to do that. ROFL. Ps. Seeing Julia in a kimono could also explain your avatar.
