Brisco County Jr is much more of a comedy/parody than Murdoch Mysteries, but I can see how aspects of it would have influenced MM. Wikipedia says this show was syndicated in Canada.
I don't think I could ever be a Brisco County Jr addict, though: needs to have a serious/angsty side to be able to support a good ship.
I read a really sad blog post regarding the SyFy channel in the US (one of the more-widespread-than-Ovation contenders for picking up MM). Some honcho was talking about how the channel was trying to distance itself from the geek viewers, and science fiction in general. THIS IS THE SYFY CHANNEL - WHERE ELSE IS SCIENCE FICTION GOING TO GO???!!! The intriguing thing here is that the SyFy channel had an "in" with that young male demographic that was supposed to be the holy grail for advertising dollars. Yet SyFy wanted to dump them in favor of picking up a "broader" (and more female) audience? Well I guess SyFy does sound like a Barbie accessory.
I think this is an insult to women. There are women who like science fiction, even without all the "relationships". Though I indulged in some Stargate shipping, very little of it was encouraged on screen. I think that just made the audience more imaginative - and more involved because of that. Further more, I liked the very male demographic spacecraft/weapons tribute fanvids as much as I liked the shipper ones. SyFy can easily embrace both male and female fans under the rubric of science fiction - no need to "distance" itself from it's core mission.
Anyway, the point is that there is a niche for shows like MM in the US, but the channel most likely to carry out that mission is fracking itself up with a vengeance right now. I think there's room for a challenger "SciFi" channel to stake a claim to the territory SyFy abandoned.
Ps. Even if the tones of Brisco County Jr and MM are very different, I would totally get a kick out of seeing Lord Bowler make a guest appearance. It would be hilarious if he appeared on a Wanted poster or something.
UPDATE: Waaa, just read that the actor that played Lord Bowler died.
