I am a new fan to Murdoch and from the US. I was bored with watching the shows we have and saw a suggestion on Netflix for Murdoch Mysteries. I love period pieces and mysteries, thought I would give it a chance. I thought the first episode was a little corny (don't hurt me!) but I loved the idea or concept of the show, so I kept going. By the next episode, I was hooked! Even though there are only 3 seasons on Netflix, I was able to find the other seasons online. I am caught up and LOVE THIS SHOW! When is the new season starting? Oh and for the other US fans, if you didn't already know, I found out that the show is aired here in the US under the name Artful Detective on the Ovation channel. They are way behind, I think they are on Season 4, but it is nice to see it!

A lot of people seem to discover MM through Netflix: it's strange that they offer only 3 seasons, when the first 4 seasons make a natural set. (Though both season 3 and 4 end on s major downer).
Ovation scheduling is weird, and it makes it difficult to watch MM in order. When I had access to Ovation, they aired episodes of Season 2 and 3 during the week. It wasn't daily but sometimes there were several episodes during the day, and they seemed to go back and rerun episodes instead of keeping a strict order. Then on Fridays they would air a "new" episode which was actually from Season 5. This is all very confusing for viewers - and someone should point out to them that this is how Fox sabotaged Firefly. Shows with ongoing arcs need to be aired in order, and you only get the addiction effect from daily syndication if those arcs build properly.
What Ovation should be doing is running MM every day, at the same time, in order, through season 6, while airing genuinely new episodes from Season 7 once a week.
On the bright side, librarians seem to like MM, especially in major urban areas. I could get my MM fix that way through Season 6, and only had to resort to watching season 7 on the downlow.
I hope you will spread the word about MM in the US so it will get better distribution here.

Not saying their all bad, NCIS comes close to MM's quality. But some are so violent, it's really not worth watching. MM really is an amazing show. The characters are well written and well...downright addicting! I love the that the heroes are actual good guys and girls, but use their wits and cool "new" inventions to save the day! Like I needed to reiterate that, you all know that already! Unfortunately because I can only get seasons 1-3, I have had to watch all the rest of the seasons on the "downlow" as you say. I was able to buy season 6 on DVD through Ebay. Working on getting the rest of them.

Working on getting the rest of them. I read an article recently that marveled about how NCIS had become such a ratings juggernaut with very little of the weekly ballyhoo that other shows get. The article concluded (correctly, I think) that it was because it was syndicated early in it's run, and people got addicted via the daily reruns. Also, while it's more violent than MM, NCIS spins toward "family" watchable, so it's hitting that spot for good people TV that the media totally misses (they focus on the sensational since it grabs headlines, and TV critics don't think a show has "quality" unless it pushes boundaries somehow). While I never got hooked on NCIS, I do have a soft spot for the original one because it has 4 different types of nerd in its main cast. No more "token nerd"!

MM really is an amazing show. The characters are well written and well...downright addicting! I'm still trying to figure out why it's so addicting. While it's a period piece, I think it partly qualifies as a fantasy in that it builds a different world and sucks you in. There's a fusion aspect that draws together elements that I would enjoy separately - the costumes, the gadgets, the mysteries, good-but-flawed characters, and of course the romance. Geeky romance at that!!! I think the music is very important for creating the mood - sort of like a Victorian music box or a toy box filled with wind-up wonders. Also the mysteries often amount to morality plays, which just makes me feel good watching it. On the shallow end, Yannick Bisson is very watchable, and I think he gets some stealth character development credit from all the other shows he's been in where he played a good guy of some sort. On the other hand, I think Helene Joy worked well for the romantic pursuit because she's not a cookie cutter "the girl". That makes their relationship more complicated and inherently interesting.

I haven't met any one else "in real life" who's heard of the series, but there seem to be plenty of us online! I guess we'll have to do some more grassroots campaigning, because it really is a great show that I think would have a ready audience here. And yes, it does seem like a lot of us came from the Netflix camp. I know I personally found an interest in the show after becoming a fan of Yannick's from Sue Thomas, F.B.Eye, but it was Netflix that allowed me to indulge my interest. I was able to watch Seasons 1-3 streaming, and my first Season 4 dvd just came in the mail the other day. I was so excited...I had to go almost a week without watching a "new" episode!
