This may be a presumptive post, considering I'm only halfway through Season 4, but here I am, waiting for my next DVD, so I might as well speculate. I am loving Season 4! With the Julia/William tension out of the way Murdoch's focus and the focus of the episodes seems to have shifted back to the purity of solving the crime. This has paved the way for some great plotlines and fantastic characters (plus a little more George/Henry interaction ). I feel like it hasn't been this great since Season 1...don't get me wrong, there were some great installments during 2 & 3, but it was muddled at times by the sticky Julia/William situation. It's no secret that I've never been an admirer of Julia's in the past, but now that she seems preoccupied with Darcy, I've even started to welcome her presence onscreen. And of course, I am not so naive as to think we've heard the last of "Jilliam", but for now I choose to sit back and enjoy!

And of course, I am not so naive as to think we've heard the last of "Jilliam", but for now I choose to sit back and enjoy! I like Season 4, too. But I think the benefit of hindsight increases the appreciation of all the plot twists and personal complications. During Season 4 people were living with the possibility of MM being cancelled (and Julia marrying Darcy being the last word) or of Helene Joy moving on to other projects (no Jilliam if MM did go on). Since fans had been set up for "Jilliam" from episode one, I can only imagine the sense of outrage and betrayal. If you explore some older posts on this forum, you can see people raging and declaring their regret for ever watching MM. Of course, MM did get uncancelled when it was taken over by CBC. And while Julia was married to Darcy, there were hints that "Jilliam" would prevail. (Hope that isn't a spoiler). So while everyone else was pushed out of an airplane without a parachute, I had already experienced the soft landing when I look back on Season 4. I think the trauma over Season 4 is also why shippers are so anxious about nailing down the relationship. I understand where they are coming from, but it's depressing for me since I only just started watching MM and closing the shipper arc will probably mean wrapping up the show as a whole.

It will definitely be interesting to look back at the series as a whole and notice the nuances that eventually add up. If only Netflix would hurry up with my DVDs!

Where were you able to buy them? Or, more specifically, were you able to buy them for less than $50/season?

Where were you able to buy them? Or, more specifically, were you able to buy them for less than $50/season? Yes, I bought them from Amazon. Seasons 1-4 as a set was around $65, averaging out under $20 per season. I paid more than I wanted to for 5 and 6. I remember 5 hit my target price under $25, and I received some warning that only 1 Season 6 was left in stock at around $30: I went ahead and bought Season 5 and 6 together. (Happy Mother's Day, Mom!). But then I was furious the next day because I got a price drop alert for Season 6 (apparently not the "last one" after all) because it also dipped to below my target price. Dang those marketing liars at Amazon! Anyway, I'm glad my Mom now has Season's 1-6, and I plan to buy Season 7 for her, too, when it eventually drops to the $25 range. Ps. I had various Amazon gift certificates, so I paid even less out of pocket.

I absolutely enjoyed seasons 1 and 4. The best! Got the DVDs too. Unfortunately, I can’t say so for season 7. I just know I won’t be buying the DVD or investing in anything from there.

Now that I've started on Season 5, I can say that I am definitely seeing a return to the William/Julia tension that it is really starting to take over again. I want to see more focus on the crime solving than the relationship! As I mentioned, I was really starting to enjoy Julia in Season 4, since she wasn't so focused on William...we'll see if that continues or not.

Also, it's effectively a done deal now, so you won't have to put up with it anymore. (Unless they get divorced - wahahahaha)

Erm...well considering shippers cried BETRAYAL!!! en masse after the end of Season 4, I have to warn you that everything after that is pretty much making things up to them. >.> I don't want to spoil things for you, so I won't give any details. But, honestly, IMHO, the relationship stuff has never overshadowed the mysteries. I have a pretty low tolerance for maudlin, tacky fan service - I'd be the first to complain if I thought the writers were phoning in the mysteries in favor of plugging in warmed-over fanfic plots while they all went for mojitos. I thought the mysteries were actually more polished since the writers and the cast needed to prove themselves on CBC and overcome what was supposed to be their final season. IMHO, Season 1 had the most episode unevenness and lines/exchanges that sounded weird or fell flat. Almost all the episodes in the CBC era have been very polished both in writing and visuals. The main exceptions I can think of are toward the end of Season 7 where I think there was some odd filming order and scene-stitching done to hide certain events. XD

Oh, I definitely agree with the crimes themselves becoming more polished, as are their solving techniques. I just thought that there was a period during Season Three when the relationship started to take up a little too much screentime, in my opinion. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how things develop!

It’s not about the visuals or sound effects, Snacky. The production team does very well in that regard. It’s this “relationship” thingy that gets in the way. They seem to think all their fans are all shippers or they only want shippers for fans. Everyone else was thrown overboard without a life jacket and left there to drown, lol. It’s been all about satisfying the shippers ever since. The Jilliam stuff really did get me in the eyes and ears since midway through season 5 and by end of season 6 I was just about ready to quit.
I’ll stop here as I don’t mean to spoil things for Annie as she tries to catch up with the seasons. I’m curious to know her comments once she is through. I hope you’re right when you say it’s all done now but I’m not so convinced.
