In other threads we discussed how modern science and other secular forces were undermining organized religion, especially the Catholic Church, during the era Murdoch Mysteries is set in.
However, if you will excuse the pun, when God closes a door, he opens a window.
The same investigations of light that brought us electricity and street lamps, revealed (illuminated? XD) that there were things that people couldn't see. Light outside the visible spectrum. Scientific instruments had already "burst the bounds" of time and space: we could see farther and farther out into space, and the fossil record proved the Earth was far older than the chronology provided in the Bible. Microscopes observed teeny tiny worlds. Light spectra could be used to determine the chemical composition of stars millions of miles away. X-rays could see inside the human body.
If so much was hidden from human sight, could there be a place for the supernatural to hide? This is why psychic investigation and exploration of the dreams and unconscious mind became important at this time. People tried to take pictures of ghosts and fairies.
Also, Quantum Theory was kicked off by Max Planck in 1900. I won't try to explain that, because I don't get it, and I don't think anyone who doesn't have a doctorate in math and/or physics understands it - especially not new age therapist types who think it has something to do with revising reality. But...there was a theory questioning the classical understanding of time and space right after God was all but shoved out of it. Coincidence? I think not.
Just bringing this all up because I wonder if William saw what was "beyond the visible spectrum" in a spiritual way. I don't believe quantum theory has come up yet on MM. (The writers are probably just as terrified of it as I am.) But if William does learn of it, will he see that as opening a Spiritual door that had been all but shut?
Lastly, this picture reminded me of William's worst nightmare. It's called "The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters". I see a raging case of insomnia in his future. D:
