Off the top of my head I can think of several episodes that revolved around fiber matching. As for hair, in "Upstairs, Downstairs" Murdoch found a blond hair on Mr. Jenkin's pillow, leading him to the housekeeper.
The article mentions that bullet matching wasn't developed as a forensic technique until the 1920's. Again, our Murdoch is a man well ahead of his time.

Still, I was surprised to see hair and fiber is the bedrock of forensic science. From TV it would seem to be fingerprints finger marks. |

It makes sense that hair and fiber matching was first because they are visible to the naked eye. Everything else needs some kind of magnification. Finger marks are just sexier. William gets to be an expert in cutting edge technique so he's a hero.
