I quite liked it as well. Nicely done! But I can see how the 15y/o girl contingent couldn't handle such a disruption to their OTP v 2.0. I like both characters and I feel the writers don't do justice to Emily's character-she's a talented actress and try as she might, she's constricted by the script. The writers aren't giving her heaps to work with.

Also, really loved the line about loving a ghost-such a beautiful, poignant line. Of course, we've probably all done it at some point.
LOL at poor George being paranoid about Julia and women in general. Poor boy.

But I'm almost afraid of what will happen if they do this. That might be how they went from the Slightly Scary Wednesday Addams character that was willing to test the boundaries of death on herself to the spunky middle class girl (this version seems more like William) which gets paired off with George. The first version was cooler. The second version sounds like a character written in committee. Those MY SHIP UBER ALLES girls are pretty scary. I thought millennials were famous for being open minded. How can everyone proclaim themselves to be ambi-sexual but then go on totalitarian lockdown about Acceptable Fandom Belief System? From the older generation to the younger: srsly, dudes.

I love this story. It nicely ties up the niggly problem that George and Emily are great together as friends but not so believable in a romance. The issue of homosexuality has come up several times in the series so why not have a gay character?
What I love most about this piece in particular is how CC captures the clipped, almost stilted cadence of Emily's speech.

As a teacher who spends all day with said millennials, I'm not surprised. They say one thing and do another all the flipping time I just make snarky comments and we all laugh together. At least they're an easy going sort.

What I love most about this piece in particular is how CC captures the clipped, almost stilted cadence of Emily's speech. There's all sorts of weird stuff going on with the way people speak in MM. Yannick attempted that clipped/stilted thing a few times, but I think he mostly gave up on it. Good thing, too - it wasn't working out for him. Helene has that high, tremolo voice: is that supposed to be an upper class affectation? Emily brought back the stilted thing, but it was okay on her since it made her seem more spooky (Wednesday Addams). However, it doesn't really work if they try to "normalize" her into the struggling middle class girl who rose above her station: does that mean her clipped speech is the practiced enunciation of Eliza Doolittle? Is there some lost "Canadian Victorian accent" that all the actors are striving after here?

I've never understood Julia's accent...why does she have one but no one else in her family does? Is it just because Helene is Australian that she sounds weird doing a Canadian accent? But she sounds pretty normal in the murdoch effect...so I assume they wanted her to sound like that for the show.

She doesn't sound Australian when she's talking "normally". Her accent makes her sound high strung, which is strange for a "modern" woman. I think it's supposed to represent "high class" somehow, though. But Ruby doesn't have that accent.

Toronto of that time was full of immigrants and many people were only first or second generation Canadians. The dominant ethnicity was English, Scottish and Irish. Can anybody count how many different accents that encompasses? I think the style of speech generally that is scripted reflects the very British influence of the time. "What have you George?" rings true. My grandfather, son of a schoolmaster, was born in England in 1900 so I'm using my memories of his speech patterns as a reference. Perhaps what you are noticing about Helene's speech has more to do with disguising her natural Aussie accent. Anytime I hear her speak it takes me a minute to adjust. The thought goes through my head..."I want you to sound like Julia". I think Georgina is just trying to make her character stand out as an individual rather than just being the next female coroner. Emily IS an odd duck and I choose to believe her life experience has lead her to develop this style of language as a defence mechanism.

I think Yannick and Georgina have the same motive: using careful/halting speech to make their characters sound like uber-nerds. Georgina was making it work better somehow, IMHO. I still think it was because of her creepy quality. William Murdoch, on the other hand, is supposed to be sympathetic, not creepy. Anyway, I'm glad Yannick gave up on that approach. I don't think I've seen it lately, anyway.
