I feel it should be pointed out that for most of history, drinking alcohol was a damn sight safer than drinking water.
Considering that it was only discovered in the 1850s and 60s that water could contain dangerous diseases (like Cholera) it's hardly surprising that an old dog like Brackenreid would continue to drink alcohol.

Considering that it was only discovered in the 1850s and 60s that water could contain dangerous diseases (like Cholera) it's hardly surprising that an old dog like Brackenreid would continue to drink alcohol. Yes-my students thought I was lying to them when I told them that. I told them to do research. Many did.

Also, in England beer supplied a lot of important nutrients. True and true. Beer, wine, spirits and tea were often safer to drink than plain water. Only if you had a guaranteed fresh supply of water (such as from a spring well) could you actually be safe drinking it, without boiling it, first. Otherwise it was generally far too dangerous.
